(195,888 posts)I saw an article here earlier about the CIAs own assessment that Khomeinis successor will be hard hard line and likely from the Republican Guard.
This is from the Daily Mail but its the best I could find quickly
However, while Mojtaba is a powerful and hardline figure in the background, he has never held government office.
Experts believe an increasing possibility is a takeover by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) - leading to a military rather than clerical form of government.

(195,888 posts)Shia Imams have to be of the Muhammad blood line (as its established). Family businesses often have a Jr and the other kids no one is sure why they are there.
Iran is like the Berlin Wall. Its only a matter of time. Anyone under 50 (slightly younger than me) doesnt remember the Revolution other than what they had drilled in their heads at school and, at this point, dont care at all. They want blue jeans and rock n roll which is what really broke down The Wall*. Beatles & Rolling Stone albums were grooved into X-ray film so they could be snuck into Soviet Russia, often listened to in churches. The kids KNEW something was going on and they were missing it. They cant travel. They have no access to the international banking system so they cant order from Alibaba. Their internet and commerce is completely internal. There was a reporter my wife told me about earlier today (BBC/CNN/?) who said they had a lot of cash and they were headed out away from urban centers in Iran. Our cards dont work there either. They are shut off and they are sick of it.
*that comes from a former G. I. I met in Germany. He worked on the General Services- Transportation Dept. Work was being done right up against the Wall. Tools were left leaning against the Wall. Bars started spilling out and someone, one guy, picked up a sledgehammer or pict axe and started going at it. Others joined. The German cops didnt want to join in on a bunch of drunk Germans so it kept going.

(2,865 posts)Freedom is equally undefinable and equally universally unattainable.
The examples of Europe do not arbitrarily apply since Europe is where colonialism sprang from. To borrow from Parke Godwin in The Snake Oil Wars people like you, Helm, can never kneel to the cross without your knee on someones neck. For far too many freedom has to come at someone elses expense. The power holders do not relinquish power easily or willingly. The power seekers are too often ready to spill blood without being able to control it and the charlatan always awaits. Sometimes it goes well albeit never smoothly. Too often it goes poorly and the way disintegrates into chaos.

But for Netanyahu, a truce also came with personal risk. As prime minister, he led a fragile coalition that depended on the support of far-right ministers who wanted to occupy Gaza, not withdraw from it. They sought a long war that would ultimately enable Israel to re-establish Jewish settlements in Gaza. If a cease-fire came too soon, these ministers might decide to collapse the ruling coalition. That would prompt early elections that polls showed Netanyahu would lose. Out of office, Netanyahu was vulnerable. Since 2020, he had been standing trial for corruption; the charges, which he denied, mostly related to granting favors to businessmen in exchange for gifts and favorable media coverage. Shorn of power, Netanyahu would lose the ability to force out the attorney general who oversaw his prosecution as indeed his government would later attempt to do.

(7,680 posts)For them, it's not instantaneous... they will plan even for years. And then find someone like Putin will help them carry it out. Putin has already ruined our country, tho. WE are the Iran of the N. American continent. I would much rather these old men do it old style... let the armies line up behind them on the battlefield... then let the leaders of the world who want to fight it out, fight it out... leave the kids alone there in the back lines. If rulers want war over resources, insults, etc., then let THEM fight it out themselves and leave the rest of us alone to live our lives.
