Supreme Court preserves only GOP-held congressional district in New York City for 2026 elections

Source: AP

Updated 6:54 PM EST, March 2, 2026

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Monday sided with Republicans in ruling that the boundaries of the only GOP-held congressional district in New York City do not not need to be redrawn for the 2026 elections, despite a court ruling that the district is unfair to Black and Hispanic residents.

Over the dissent of the court’s three liberal justices, the conservative majority halted the state court ruling that had ordered New York’s redistricting commission to redraw the district held by Rep. Nicole Malliotakis that covers Staten Island and a small piece of Brooklyn.

The outcome is a victory for Republicans in a national tug-of-war over redistricting that could determine control of the closely divided House of Representatives. Republicans currently hold a razor-thin majority.

New York Republicans and the Trump administration had sought the high court’s intervention. Qualifying for congressional elections in New York began last week.

This is a hint at what is going to happen to Sect. 2 of the Voting Rights Act.

Her statement today:

"Today’s decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to keep New York’s 11th Congressional District intact helps restore the public’s confidence in our judicial system and proves the challenge to our district lines was always meritless. The plaintiffs in this case attempted to manipulate our state’s courts to use race as a weapon to rig our elections. That was wrong and, as demonstrated by today’s ruling, clearly unconstitutional. Unfortunately, the politicization of New York’s courts and its judges necessitated action from the nation’s highest court. I thank the Justices who stopped the voters on Staten Island and in Southern Brooklyn from being stripped of their ability to elect a representative who reflects their values. Whether I serve another term in Congress is a decision for the voters, not Democrat party bosses and their high-priced lawyers."

Before Malliotakis got the seat, it was briefly held by a moderate (D) - Max Rose - after the (D) blue wave in 2018 during 45's first term. This 2nd term is a million times worse.

In 2018 the district was R+3 and was marked as the 214th most republican district nationwide - the very definition of a pick-up target.

Now it’s the 185th. But after the 2018 slaughter they still had 199. So again - without redrawing the lines we’ll have to do much better than 2018 for this seat to flip.

You have ignored that a number of R+10 or even more, special election seats got upended this year.

Republicans Are Getting “Crushed” in Recent Elections, And They Are Freaking Out About the Midterms

The DCCC's somewhat hyperbolic press release headline aside, the trend is pretty clear this year. Many of these people are 45-supporters, PERIOD. If he's not on the ballot, a "+10" can drop down to a "+5" or less and make the seat a bit more competitive.

We still have 8 months of terror to live through before we get there.

The rules are very different when only 25% of the electorate shows up.

Not all have been "special elections". There were "off year" (when it comes to "federal" ) STATE LEGISLATIVE elections with flipped seats.

Look at what happened in VA last year, where 13 seats were flipped - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2025_Virginia_House_of_Delegates_election

And in NJ, where 5 seats were flipped - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2025_New_Jersey_General_Assembly_election

There is a popular saying about "the trend is your friend" and the hope in this case, is that the trend continues.

They should be taken off their seats and plopped in a deserving jail cell to wait for their trials for treason.
