Hawaii dam at risk of 'imminent' failure as catastrophic flash flooding hits Oahu

Source: CNN

Evacuations have been ordered with a dam on Hawaii’s Oahu island at risk of imminent failure as the second significant storm in a week pounds the state.

Catastrophic flash flooding from the storm has already destroyed homes, forced rescues and cut off towns in northern Oahu.

The Wahiawa Dam “may collapse or breach at any time,” according to an alert from the Oahu Department of Emergency Management. Residents in the towns of Waialua and Haleiwa have been told to leave immediately due to “potential life-threatening flooding” and a flash flood warning has been issued for the area until 1:15 p.m. local time.

“Do not stop to pack or prepare your home. Only take items ready to go,” the alert said.

I know there are others on Oahu, but their names escape me at the moment. I hope that all are safe.

A lot of military personnel live there. Waialua and Haleiwa are both on the North Shore of surfing fame.

Directly south of the area affected.

He texted me earlier around 9:30am his time saying that he and his wife were okay. They have enough supplies to last a while. But there is not much they can evacuate to other than heading east. The H-1 is always bumper to bumper.

The ground is just completely saturated here. Walked to check the water level of a nearby rain ditch and was in 6” of water covering my ankles and etc on grass that did not appear to be underwater from a few steps away. Squish squish.

Even the birds are audibly unhappy. The rare solo baby bird is peeping very pitifully here and there.*

A huge tree fell over on Kalākaua across from Kaimana beach and the exposed root ball dwarfed 5’ reporter.

We did need the rain. Still.

* Before I’m called heartless, I did put a little box together with some warm stuff in it for the next one. We’ll have to figure out how to keep the dog off him. It should be a solveable problem.
