Democrats on Capitol Hill are sounding alarms over the potential commutation of an election denier and convicted felons sentence in Colorado, warning the states Democratic governor that clemency for Tina Peters would undermine the justice system and diminish the gravity of her crimes.
Gov. Jared Polis (D) has been under heavy pressure from President Trump to release Peters, a former county election clerk and ardent Trump supporter serving a nine-year sentence for election tampering in support of Republican efforts to overturn Trumps 2020 defeat. And Polis opened the door wide to that prospect earlier this month, when he suggested the sentence was overly severe for a first-time offender. Hes now weighing his decision.
The development has prompted outcry from local Democratic officials in Colorado, and the protests are now spilling onto Capitol Hill, where Democrats spanning the political spectrum are voicing concerns that clemency for Peters would lend credence to Trumps false claims of election fraud and downplay the severity of election interference at the expense of the publics faith in the system.
In an era where you have a president whos attacking the rule of law, attacking the Constitution, using the government and the Department of Justice to suppress dissent and political opponents, now is not the time to capitulate to the presidents demands with regard to his political cronies, Rep. Jason Crow (D-Colo.) said Thursday.

(9,344 posts)Michael Bennet wants his position. I want our AG, Phil Weiser, for it. Phil is not getting much mention by the MSM. But Indivisible Colorado has endorsed him. I hope that helps.
I agree with you - I was very disappointed that he even considered it. Dhe is a menace.

(2,226 posts)since Polis is term limited, Bennett wants his job of Governor (and Polis' backing, of course).......
Maybe Bennett will be backing Polis to fill the U.S. Senate position he is leaving??????????
Aren't they all quite a crowd.......Polis is a Corporate Loving DINO, Bennett, Hickenlooper, and DeGette do-nothing Dems who we haven't heard a peep out of in what??? the last TEN? years??????????
We actually have a few Dems that are doing a great solid job here in Colorado, but all the top ones are pathetic, in my opinion.....

(868 posts)And now he's threatening to move NCAR and NOAA. God only knows what else. Polis was forced to change what SNAP benefits cover. My guess is that Polis has higher aspirations, Trump knows it, and trump is playing with Polis like he's a little mouse. I feel sorry for Polis but if he wants the support of Dems he'd better not cave to trump.
He already SUCKS on gun control. I'm really disappointed with him, honestly. If he's already lost a lot of Dems why the hell is he caving to trump? It can't just be NCAR and NOAA.
