Eligible men will be automatically registered into the U.S. military draft pool by December in an effort to streamline the existing self-registration process, according to the agency that oversees the system.
On March 30, the Selective Service System the federal agency which oversees the database of men eligible for service in the event of a military draft submitted a proposed rule for automatic registration to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, according to its website.
The new automatic registration process was approved by Congress under the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2026, which President Donald Trump signed into law in December 2025.
According to SSS website, the agency will implement the switch to automatic registration by December, creating a "streamlined registration process and corresponding workforce realignment."

(2,510 posts)They already had to register at 18. All this does is do it automatically for them so they dont need to remember to do it themselves, though most schools seem to help there. My high-school helped all seniors register to vote before graduation and all the men to register for selective service to ensure we could submit Fafsa applications. Not registering for selective service makes you ineligible for some federal and state benefits. Plus its technically a felony.

But no one can claim Americans are noticing anything these days.

(44,971 posts)It should be this easy. You hit 18, youre registered for your current address. You move somewhere and automatic voter registration as soon as you sign up for utilities or change address on your services. And if you dont have utilities, then easy change via online or phone

They have forgotten the purpose of an election, which is to determine the will of the people

(4,143 posts)those for whom a future draft board may evaluate for draft eligibility. It's the first step in a two-step process where your local draft board makes a non-ministerial substantive determination. Follow-on actions, such as mailing you a notice of the board's determination, are ministerial functions that are exercised without making substantive decisions.
By contrast, voter registration combines the first two steps in the draft process. In voting registration, not only is your name incorporated on voter rolls, but actual voting eligibility is determined. After voting registration is complete, further steps are ministerial. and not substantial. Things like asking for your ID, or otherwise verifying your identity, comparing signatures, ensuring you are present at the correct voting place, and determining if you have already voted are ministerial functions in which voting officials do not determine if you are actually eligible to vote in the first place. That was done during registration, and after that, voting officials are just supposed to verify your identity, ensuring you receive the correct ballot, and process your ballot for counting.
Thanks for asking the question - it's important that people understand the differences in the draft and voting processes.
For context, the last men drafted in the US were inducted on June 30, 1973. The notifications for that induction had been issued on December 7, 1972. I had a low number and would have been in that group if I had not already been in the Army since July 3, 1972. With respect to voting, I served as a (2008 primary election) check-in judge and later as a (2008 general election) chief judge in our Maryland precinct. After my job transfer to Florida, I had no desire to be part of their process.

(44,971 posts)I show up at the poll and hand that to the woman watching the election book. And she lets me go in the booth and vote. I never show ID. Ive been voting the same place for years. We never had a voting integrity question until Trump. as far as the draft, my brother had student deferments until they did the lottery and then he got a high number so we were very lucky there. He also had a medical deferment for an operation. It was the poor kids that went.

Maybe Dems in Congress could author legislation *requiring* everyone registered to receive a legal notification of such.

(1,020 posts)My only real problem with the draft or compulsory service (military or otherwise) has been that I question its fairness when implemented. Flame away, it's just my opinion. The whole "some animals are more equal than others" often creeps in. Everyone has someone they'll miss, plans to do this or that, objections to conforming, etc... but it's the subjective weights given to various classes that usually seem to be what sours all this.
"Everyone can be called to serve!"***

(1,001 posts)I know people who were non citiezns that were in the US for school in the 60s and were drafted, after being disenrolled for grades and partying too much, and sent to Vietnam. One was a Russian citizen. Th US government reserved the right to draft any males over the age of 18 who were in the US for more than 6 months.
