Trump says U.S. will blockade Strait of Hormuz after Iran peace talks fail

President Donald Trump on Sunday said the U.S. will blockade the Strait of Hormuz after talks held in Pakistan to end the Iran war hit the skids. “Effective immediately, the United States Navy, the Finest in the World, will begin the process of BLOCKADING any and all Ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump said in a post to his social media platform Truth Social. “The Blockade will begin shortly. Other Countries will be involved with this Blockade. Iran will not be allowed to profit off this Illegal Act of EXTORTION.”

The announcement of a U.S. blockade of the strait likely scuttles any hopes that the war would end in the coming days following peace talks in Islamabad. It also threatens to exacerbate the economic crisis that has gripped global economies since the war broke out and Iran began restricting access to the strait, a chokepoint which carries about a fifth of the world’s oil.

Trump said the U.S. blockade is an effort to stop Iran from policing the strait and benefiting economically while the rest of the world suffers from its closure. “At some point, we will reach an ‘ALL BEING ALLOWED TO GO IN, ALL BEING ALLOWED TO GO OUT’ basis, but Iran has not allowed that to happen by merely saying, ‘There may be a mine out there somewhere,’ that nobody knows about but them,” he said. “THIS IS WORLD EXTORTION, and Leaders of Countries, especially the United States of America, will never be extorted.”

Trump also announced in the post that the U.S. Navy will “seek and interdict every vessel in International Waters that has paid a toll to Iran.”

All along. But, first the Turd Reich had to go through a pantomime of negotiations. Which is why the throwaway Vance was sent.

Blockade the strait from whom exactly and why? I guess Trump’s thinky meat wants a toll too. All a blockade will accomplish is making the whole world hate the US more and it won’t shorten the war by a day.

US Navy to start 'blockading any and all ships' trying to enter or leave Strait of Hormuz, says Trump

But another motive could be to block China from shipping weapons to Iran. I read yesterday that China was, or soon will be, doing that.

If it weren't for the dangers and world instability of this situation, it would be laughable that tsf accuses someone else of extortion.

Are there enough US Navy ships in the region to completely block off both ends of the strait so that no other ships could get past without ramming them? What happens if a Chinese ship refuses to stop? Will tsf order the Navy to fire at it, setting off war with China? Will other nations band together with China to force a showdown?

International ships playing chicken in a narrow strait of water.

If the Navy removes mines and tsf opens the strait, will he decide which nations can use it? Will he -- without a shred of irony-- charge fees to pass through the straight? His excuse would be to recover the costs of getting the strait open.

Derived from Wiktionary,...

Wet your beak" is an idiom, often associated with gangster slang, meaning to take a share of the financial proceeds, profits, or benefits from a business deal or, frequently, illicit activity. It is used to describe getting a "cut" or a small portion of money, notably mentioned in mafia-themed media.
Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Usage Examples and Meaning:
Taking a Cut: It indicates a desire for personal profit. For example, "Before the deal closes, he wants to wet his beak".
Mafia/Gangster Context: Famous in mafia slang, meaning to collect a bribe or a share of protection money, as seen in The Godfather, where it refers to taking a small percentage of profits.
Less Common Literal Usage: Rarely, it can idiomatically mean to have a drink of a beverage.
Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Synonyms and Related Phrases:
Get a cut/slice of the pie.
Take a share.
Wet one's whistle (usually means to have a drink, though often confused).
Collect a kickback.
Merriam-Webster

The phrase implies a demand or expectation of profit for allowing a deal to proceed or for providing protection.

Donald J. Trump
@realDonaldTrump

Iran promised to open the Strait of Hormuz, and they knowingly failed to do so. This caused anxiety, dislocation, and pain to many people and Countries throughout the World. They say they put mines in the water, even though all of their Navy, and most of their “mine droppers,” have been completely blown up. They may have done so, but what ship owner would want to take the chance? There is great dishonor and permanent harm to the reputation of Iran, and what’s left of their “Leaders,” but we are beyond all of that. As they promised, they better begin the process of getting this INTERNATIONAL WATERWAY OPEN AND FAST! Every Law in the book is being violated by them. I have been fully debriefed by Vice President JD Vance, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner, on the meeting that took place in Islamabad through the kind and very competent leadership of Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, of Pakistan. They are very extraordinary men, and continuously thank me for saving 30 to 50 million lives in what would have been a horrendous War with India. I always appreciate hearing that — The amount of Humanity spoken of is incomprehensible.

The meeting with Iran began early in the morning, and lasted throughout the night — Close to 20 hours. I could go into great detail, and talk about much that has been gotten but, there is only one thing that matters — IRAN IS UNWILLING TO GIVE UP ITS NUCLEAR AMBITIONS! In many ways, the points that were agreed to are better than us continuing our Military Operations to conclusion, but all of those points don’t matter compared to allowing Nuclear Power to be in the hands of such volatile, difficult, unpredictable people. My three Representatives, as all of this time went by, became, not surprisingly, very friendly and respectful of Iran’s Representatives, Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf, Abbas Araghchi, and Ali Bagheri, but that doesn’t matter because they were very unyielding as to the single most important issue and, as I have always said, right from the beginning, and many years ago, IRAN WILL NEVER HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON!

So, there you have it, the meeting went well, most points were agreed to, but the only point that really mattered, NUCLEAR, was not. Effective immediately, the United States Navy, the Finest in the World, will begin the process of BLOCKADING any and all Ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz. At some point, we will reach an “ALL BEING ALLOWED TO GO IN, ALL BEING ALLOWED TO GO OUT” basis, but Iran has not allowed that to happen by merely saying, “There may be a mine out there somewhere,” that nobody knows about but them. THIS IS WORLD EXTORTION, and Leaders of Countries, especially the United States of America, will never be extorted. I have also instructed our Navy to seek and interdict every vessel in International Waters that has paid a toll to Iran. No one who pays an illegal toll will have safe passage on the high seas. We will also begin destroying the mines the Iranians laid in the Straits. Any Iranian who fires at us, or at peaceful vessels, will be BLOWN TO HELL! Iran knows, better than anyone, how to END this situation which has already devastated their Country. Their Navy is gone, their Air Force is gone, their Anti Aircraft and Radar are useless, Khomeini, and most of their “Leaders,” are dead, all because of their Nuclear ambition. The Blockade will begin shortly. Other Countries will be involved with this Blockade. Iran will not be allowed to profit off this Illegal Act of EXTORTION. They want money and, more importantly, they want Nuclear. Additionally and, at an appropriate moment, we are fully “LOCKED AND LOADED,” and our Military will finish up the little that is left of Iran! President DONALD J. TRUMP

Sun Apr 12, 2026, 10:19 AM

Mr. Trump believes that he emerged the victor of the conflict, and therefore, as the special envoy Steve Witkoff puts it, Iran should simply “capitulate.”

That is not how it happened in the past. The last major agreement between Tehran and Washington, reached during the Obama administration, took two years to negotiate. And it was full of compromises, including allowing Iran to retain a small amount of its nuclear stockpile, and gradually lifting the restrictions on its nuclear activities until 2030, when Iran would be permitted to conduct any nuclear activity permissible under the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.

But the deadlock Mr. Vance ran into was essentially the same as the ones that derailed negotiations in late February, and prompted Mr. Trump to order the attack. (That negotiation was run by Mr. Witkoff and Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law, who were present in Islamabad during the more than 20 hours of negotiations.)

Back then, the Iranians offered to “suspend” their nuclear operations for a few years, but not to give up their stockpiles of near-bomb-grade uranium or permanently surrender the capability to enrich uranium on their own soil. To the Iranians, that is their right as a signatory of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, which commits them to never making a nuclear weapon. To the Americans, it is what Mr. Witkoff called “a tell” that Iran always wants a ready option to build a nuclear weapon, even if it never exercises that option.

Thirty-eight days of war appear to have hardened that view, not loosened it.

Just as soon as markets open.

Some Iranian crude has been transiting the strait lately, despite the sanctions. I wondered if that was some gesture of good will as some sort of talks were going on. Who the hell knows? Now the US is going to block even 3rd party shipments who made a side deal with Tehran. If Trump thinks that will hurt the rest of the world more than the US, he's in for a rather rude lesson on global trade inter-connectivity. There are no trade islands anymore. No one is truly insulated.

Sun Apr 12, 2026, 10:39 AM

Why is everybody acting like this is some kind of strange move? "Strange" is invading Karge Island and thinking it'll be a bargaining chip. "Strange" is thinking you can drop enough bombs on bridges that would break a blockade.

"Strange" is NOT saying, "if you're stopping everybody else from using it, we'll stop you from using it." That actually makes sense. Will it be bad for oil markets? Sure, Iranian oil will be blockaded along with Iran's blockade of ships to and from Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Oman. Will a blockade of Iran-friendly vessels make the rest of the world mad? They didn't seem mad enough to do anything about Iran's blockade of Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Oman, so I'm not sure why this, in particular, would put them over the edge.

Or are you under the impression that China wants a conflict with the US Navy years before they're prepared for it, even within range of land based weapons, much less nowhere near Chinese waters?

China's current strategy of doing nothing (or even relatively profiting off the situation) is obviously non-tenable if their oil isn't getting through.

Oil production constitutes approximately 18% to 23% of Iran's total GDP. While the sector is a significant driver of economic growth,, its direct contribution fluctuates based on global prices and sanctions, often accounting for a quarter of the nation's total economic output and a substantial share of government revenue.

The Strait is closed to all but a handful of ships, and now Trump wants to block that handful.

This action will cause the price of oil to increase even more.

Iran won't be able to get their ships out, so why the fuck to Trump lift the sanctions on Iranian oil on the high seas in the first place.

56. This makes sense. I believe trump and the republican's goal is to destroy the USA

this is one more step in obtaining that goal.

Just like destroying our economy with tariffs and "tax cuts" , destroying the CDC, FDA, EPA, FEMA. Next social security medicare and medicaid.

The goal is NOT to win this war.

The stupid overgrown bully thinks he can bully the whole world.

Now it's Trump (not the US) blockading the strait of Hormuz.
Now it's Trump (not the US) that tried to extort Iran for cash as a pre-condition for a ceasefire.
Now it's Trump (not the US) adding more economic uncertainty to the problems he already created with his tariff bullshit

because our oil companies benefit too.

The press told you where this is going. $200 a barrel. Then there is opportunity - TACO Trade! Short oil at $200 and watch is drop to $125.

YMMV, Your Numbers may be different, plug in your own!
