Trump says he'll be looking into banks regarding Los Angeles wildfires

WASHINGTON, April 24 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said his administration would look into banks singling out Wells Fargo WFC.N over payments and debt treatment after the Los Angeles wildfires, marking the latest friction with the banking industry.
The 2025 Palisades Fire in Los Angeles and Eaton Fire in Altadena killed 22 people, destroyed some 12,000 homes and caused over $50 billion in property damage.
"Wells Fargo, in particular, has been very difficult to deal with," Trump said in a post on Truth Social late on Thursday. "The Banks must treat those people, who so horribly lost their Homes in this tragic fire, very fairly and well.". A spokesperson for Wells Fargo declined to comment.
Trump's second term has fueled friction with Wall Street, as allegations of "debanking" and exchanges over credit card rate caps have strained ties with executives at big banks despite a broader deregulatory push favoring the sector.

The people of Finland have reacted with bemusement on social media at Donald Trumps assertions that the country rakes its forests to help prevent forest fires. Speaking on Saturday in Paradise, California, about the role of forest management in stemming wildfires, Trump said: I was with the president of Finland and he said: We have, much different, we are a forest nation. He called it a forest nation. And they spend a lot of time on raking and cleaning and doing things, and they dont have any problem.
Finnish social media users immediately posted a range of jokes about Trumps comments, which do not reflect the reality of how forests are managed in the country.

There were also people on hand to point out that the factors affecting whether there are forest fires are very different in California and Finland:

For his part, Sauli Niinistö appears to recall the conversation somewhat differently. He said although he told Trump that the Finns took care of their forests, he did not specifically recall mentioning raking as part of the planning.

Weve got to take care of the floors. The floors of the forest, Trump said in Paradise, CA.
Other countries do it differentlypresident of Finland said they spend a lot of time on raking and cleaning. They dont have any problem and when it is, its a very small problem.

I grew up in Finland. a) it rains all year round. b) we have a lengthy and cold winter. c) Finland is a sparsely populated country with just over 5mil ppl, with land size ~3/4 of CA and most of it forests and lakes. d) no friggin body is raking the forests.

(171,011 posts)His addled brain goes back to the "olden days" of the California gold rush!

My own local bank (established well before California and most of the rest of the country became states because there was no Constitution yet), was a victim of multiple takeovers and eventually came under what is now called "Wells Fargo".

(23,415 posts)I was a Wells Fargo teller when Norwest Financial took them over in the late '90s.
They immediately started cutting hours and forcing tellers to push reverse mortgages and (very high-interest) overdraft protection scams.
I actually got a small prize for my efforts (much to the annoyance of a Repug co-worker) - but I quit shortly afterward.

And our local arena here in Philly (that replaced the old Spectrum and was originally named "Spectrum II" until the bank names started up on it), changed names each time too!
That went from the Corestates Center to the First Union Center to the Wachovia Center to the Wells Fargo Center and now this past year, Comcast just swooped in to rename it the "Xfinity Mobile Arena".

And now, of course, El Bastardo wants his slimy name on everything - as if everything else around us wasn't dystopian enough already.

(11,352 posts)In North Carolina, banks being traded around was almost a pastime when I was living there.
One would expect to get all new checks at least twice a year because of it. They would not always change names, but enough did to make it a huge pain.
Nowadays, there seems to be only five banks anyway...

(30,002 posts)While they were supposedly working on a re-fi for my farm in CA, they foreclosed on it. After that practice was outlawed, I received a whopping $300 in a class action suit.
Years later, it was discovered they had been way overcharging on my mortgage payment for some insurance we never signed up for. At least I got a $6K reimbursement out of that.
They're crooked, and will keep up their misdeeds until they get caught with their hand in the cookie jar.

(11,352 posts)They have been tagged three times since that big case where they were adding stuff to people's accounts and forcing employees to create stuff out of thin air to meet sales goals.
We were kind of forced to go with them when we first moved here. We desperately need to change. I hope I can convince the better half to do so.
I am not a fan of that kind of business model.

(171,011 posts)Stay tuned for the eventual next manufactured instance of "fraud", their buzzword for initiating investigations against Democratic elected officials.
Later in the article is this -
It was not clear how Trump would look into banks or if his administration would take any potential action. The banks have said they provided forbearance to borrowers affected by the wildfires and gave financial assistance to help in the relief efforts.
The president made the post after meeting with Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger.
In a joint statement posted to Bass' X account on Wednesday, Bass and Barger said they had "a very positive discussion about FEMA and other rebuilding funds, as well as the support of the President to continue joining us in pressuring the insurance companies to pay what they owe - and for the big banks to step up to ease the financial pressure on L.A. families."

(2,429 posts)One of the most corrupt banking institutions in America? Just look at what Wells Fargo's Executives and CEO's have done in the past ten years.........Wholesale corruption and REPEATEDLY caught several times over and over again.........Of course, the CEO and Executives walk away, scott free, with un-fathomable Bonuses, crying all the way to the bank. (Like so many other Corporation's CEO's and executives this past decade..)
Evidently they didn't cut Trump's CABAL in for a portion of the goodies, and he is getting even, as he always does......which is his M.O.
He is merely using his power, to get the Banks to "Ante" up to him, so he will go away......much like he has done with so many Media and Corporations in the past who weren't shouting his praises.....
