US withdrawing 5,000 troops from Germany, US officials say

Source: Reuters

WASHINGTON, May 1 (Reuters) - The United States is withdrawing 5,000 troops from NATO ally Germany, the Pentagon announced on Friday, as a rift over the Iran ‌war widens between President Donald Trump and Europe. Trump had threatened a drawdown in forces earlier this week after sparring with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who said on Monday the Iranians were humiliating the U.S. in talks to end the two-month-old war and that he did not see what exit strategy Washington was pursuing.

A senior Pentagon official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said recent German rhetoric had been "inappropriate and unhelpful."
"The president is rightly reacting to these counterproductive remarks," the official said. The Pentagon said the withdrawal was expected to be completed over the next six to 12 months. Germany is home to some 35,000 active-duty U.S. military personnel, more than anywhere else in Europe.

The official said the drawdown would bring U.S. troop levels in Europe back to roughly pre-2022 levels, before Russia's invasion of Ukraine triggered a buildup by then-President Joe Biden. The official also cast the decision in terms of the Trump administration's push for Europe to become the main security provider on the continent. But it is nonetheless another potent reminder of Trump's willingness to respond to perceived disloyalty by allies.

Reuters exclusively reported last week an internal Pentagon email that outlined options to punish NATO allies that Washington believes failed to support U.S. operations in the war with Iran, including suspending Spain from NATO and reviewing the U.S. position on Britain's claim to the Falkland Islands.

Trump says 'probably' when asked if he might pull US troops out of Italy, Spain (Reuters)

WASHINGTON, April 30 (Reuters) - President Donald Trump on Thursday said "probably" when asked whether he would consider pulling U.S. troops out ‌of Italy and Spain, a day after announcing that Washington ‌was looking at reducing the number of military personnel in Germany.

Trump has harshly criticized NATO allies for not sending their navies to help open the Strait of Hormuz, which was closed to global shipping following the start of a U.S.-Israeli air war against Iran on February 28. He has also said that he is considering ‌withdrawing the United States from the alliance.

An internal Pentagon email, reported by Reuters last week, outlined options for the United States to punish NATO allies it believes failed to support U.S. operations in the war with Iran, including suspending Spain from the alliance.

Of course, that's lost on a petty orange toddler and the yes men won't bring it up. Stuttgart, Ramstein and others are vital to the US military's reach into the ME and Africa. Without them, power projection becomes far more difficult.

From a European defense standpoint, it's not like this is 1975. There really aren't a heck of a lot of US bodies there anymore compared to the Cold War, and most of what's left isn't tip of the spear. Plus, Putin just doesn't have the resources to threaten Europe conventionally. He's running out of gas in Ukraine as it is.

If he or more likely his successor is able to rebuild, that will take years and the EU will be more than a match on their own. Our erstwhile allies know what to do and they're doing it. Donnie is just being petty. Stupidly petty. The big loser here is the US.

It does NOT exist to assist offensive wars not authorized by the United Nations.

And apparently, everyone around him is afraid to correct him. He just keeps embarrassing us in front of the rest of the world.

They have always been placed where they could be strategic staging posts for an airborne or ground attack on a foreign country.

A quick Google showns how many US bases were operational in the area during the Vietnam war.
Not so much defensive, as staging posts.

This may be one of the reasons those ME bases are under attack by Iran.

We would be out of Europe.
I find our military shameful for allowing such blatant unamerican orders to go unquestioned.
Sheep! No Spine!
They likely would launch on an illegal order!
