Virginia Supreme Court blocks redistricting referendum and invalidates new congressional map

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Omaha Steve (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Source: Washington Examiner

The Supreme Court of Virginia invalidated a voter-approved redistricting referendum on Friday, ruling that lawmakers failed to follow the constitutional process required to place the measure on the ballot and halting Democrat-led efforts to implement a new congressional map.

The majority held that lawmakers acted too late when they approved the amendment proposal after more than a million early ballots had already been cast in last year’s Virginia elections, according to the decision released Friday morning. The state constitution requires the legislature to vote on any proposed constitutional amendments in two stages with an election in between to give voters the opportunity to hold their representatives accountable if they don’t like the proposed amendment, and the state Supreme Court found that Virginia Democrats did not follow that process.

The decision resolves a high-stakes legal fight over whether the Democrat-controlled General Assembly complied with the Virginia Constitution when it moved to place the amendment before voters in a special election last month, and means Virginia will keep the map that is favorable to Republicans in five of its congressional districts.

The Virginia Supreme Court has blocked state officials from using a new congressional map approved by voters this year that was poised to help Democrats gain additional seats in the US House.

The state’s highest court ruled on Friday that the legislature’s process for pursuing the new map violated Virginia’s Constitution and ordered that an earlier version be used in the upcoming midterm elections.

The decision marks a significant milestone in an escalating effort by the major US political parties to maximize partisan advantages ahead of the November vote by redrawing congressional districts. The Democrat-led Virginia plan came in response to a redistricting effort by Republicans in Texas last year supported by President Donald Trump.

The panel upheld a ruling from a Tazewell County judge who sided with Republican state lawmakers and declared the redistricting effort unlawful. Democratic state officials could next ask the US Supreme Court to intervene on an emergency basis. In recent months, the US justices allowed new congressional maps to remain in effect in Texas and later in California for the midterm election.

It is things like this why I am not optimistic about the midterms

2000, 2016, and 2024 is why we are where we are today.

and to all those people who refused to vote for VP Harris in 2024, Hillary in 2016, and Gore in 2000, by either voting third party or not voting, F**K YOU!!!

NO, THIS IS NOT A JOKE.

White supremacists have been working for years to overturn the Federal victory at Appomattox. First came the end of Reconstruction with the Hayes-Tilden 1876 election. Then came Southern Redemption and Jim Crow. We thought the Voting Rights and Civil Rights acts of 1964 and 1965 were the end of it.

No one wanted to admit that Southern whites along with a lot of white people in the rest of the country were white supremacists. They've slowly worked toward this day for over 100 years and now they win.

Look for 25-30 Black Democrats to leave Congress after the elections of 2026 and 2028 -- that's assuming we have elections in 2026 or 2028. The South will then control Congress as it did until the 1960's.

Treason was not adequately punished, and the same families that ran the South then, are still doing so today.

Because I worry this is going to cause a couple different problems.
One, it's going to leave Republicans with a clear majority of permanent seats.
Two, I worry this is going to cause a Fetterman style shift to the center in some and derail DNC support, such as it is, for the campaigns of progressive candidates.
