Trump planning to build helipad at White House for new Marine One: Reports

Source: The Hill

05/18/26 12:04 PM ET

President Trump is planning to build a helipad at the White House for the new Marine One helicopter, according to multiple reports.

The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday, citing sources familiar with the matter, that the president has discussed placing a helipad at the White House so the new helicopter, a VH-92A Patriot, does not destroy the South Lawn.

Three sources also told The Washington Post that Trump is looking to create a permanent helipad. The newspaper reported that the helipad concept has been floated for years and is seen as a way to prevent the helicopter, which is more likely to burn grass than previous Marine One aircraft, from damaging the South Lawn. The Hill has reached out to the White House about the reported helipad.

Trump has undertaken multiple renovation and construction projects at the White House and in Washington in his second term. Renovations to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool on the National Mall recently emerged as a flash point in the president’s push to overhaul some of the most iconic landmarks in the District. The president announced plans to fix and renovate the reflecting pool last month, calling it “terrible” and “filthy.”

4. Recently read the Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey can't land at the White House. Maybe he wants to move to that for his rides.

And maybe Trump has worries from memories of the company exec who died in a small-ish helicopter crash that he was supposed to be on but ducked out of last minute?

They'll tell us it's this much money but then raise the cost and skim off a few millions

It happens with EVERY project he tosses on us

Do we even know how much installing and painting the border wall has/will cost us?

There needs to be a moratorium on this welfare queen's requests

And a BIG FAT Audit

Yes he's going to talk about it like he had this brilliant idea and other stuff but logically it's not smart to have a heavy helicopter always landing and taking off on grass. It can be impacted negatively by rain and snow plus there is always the chance of more debris getting sucked in to the engines or blown out at people. The new Marine One weighs at least 3,000 lbs more than the current one and it's engines are closer to the ground.
