Threat of massive chemical tank explosion is 'eliminated', California officials say

Source: BBC

The threat of a failing chemical tank in Orange County exploding has been eliminated following an overnight operation, California fire officials say. Division Chief Craig Covey said on Monday that the tank's temperature has decreased, which led to the "positive news".

The tank, which contains thousands of gallons of methyl methacrylate - a highly volatile and flammable substance used to make plastic - has been at risk of either a major spillage or an explosion in recent days.

There is currently no active leak, but crews have been working since Sunday to assess the risk. A leak remains a possible outcome, officials have said, as an evacuation order for the area remains in place. The damaged chemical tank in southern California cracked over the weekend, and officials were hopeful pressure that had built up inside the tank would be gradually released

The threat of a BLEVE, or Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion, has been "eliminated" after an overnight operation, Orange County Fire Authority Interim Chief TJ McGovern said on Monday.

who know what they are doing is so important. I am glad California did not resort to FOX TV hosts, Russian collaborators, make believe medical researchers, and money self-dealers, in charge of this potential disaster for so many. Excellent job!

I can imagine a fire hose drawn from a cooling pool. I suppose HazMats have protocols for such events.

What any company stores and uses on a regular basis is s matter of record at the county and or city. For a facility like that city/county hazmat and the fire department having jurisdiction should have been performing regular walk throughs to stay familiar with the site and its operations.

My wife, the chemist says that this chemical wants to polymerize and needs chemicals to keep that from happening while in storage. He best guess without actual knowledge of the site is contamination and or incorrect mixing.

I'm glad they feel it is under control. Happier that it appears that there will be no deaths.
