Iran strikes US bases in Gulf after Trump orders attacks near Hormuz

DUBAI/WASHINGTON, June 10 (Reuters) - Iran's Revolutionary Guards said they had carried out missile and drone attacks on U.S. military bases in Jordan, Kuwait and Bahrain on Wednesday in retaliation for American strikes on Iranian targets around the Strait of Hormuz. The exchange, after U.S. President Donald Trump said that Iran had downed a U.S. Apache helicopter near the strait, marks one of the most significant escalations since Washington and Tehran agreed to a ceasefire in April. "I believe the response should be very strong, very powerful, and that's what this one is," Trump told ABC News on Tuesday.
The U.S. military said it targeted Iranian air defences, ground control stations and surveillance radar sites in what it described as a "proportional response" to the downing of the helicopter, whose two crew members were rescued. The tit-for-tat attacks, just days after Iran exchanged fire with Israel for the first time since the ceasefire, cast fresh doubt on prospects for a deal to end the war, which began on February 28 with joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran.
Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Tehran would "reassess" its diplomatic engagement with Washington after "repeated ceasefire violations". "Any diplomatic process requires a minimum stable environment," Esmaeil Baghaei said. The U.S. strikes lasted around four hours, with Central Command saying shortly before 9 p.m. ET (0100 GMT Wednesday) that operations had ended. A U.S. official said nearly 20 Iranian targets were hit. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said Qeshm Island and the port city of Sirik were attacked. Iranian media also reported explosions in Bandar Abbas, another port city, and later near Jask at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz.
IRAN TARGETS U.S. BASES
The IRGC said it had attacked U.S. bases in Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan with drones and missiles in response to the new "U.S. aggression".

(8,578 posts)No US based journalists have bothered to ask this basic question or inform the public of the circumstances. Since the shootdown resulted in a "response" that required a multimillion-dollar expenditure in taxpayer money and essentially involves the US in an war after the expiration of a period in which the executive can take military action without the consent of Congress, it would seem that the public deserves a clear explanation of what happened.
Presumably, the attack helicopter was flying support for an operation related to the so-called blockade and/or interdicting shipping on its own. It's not clear why we are not being informed of this, except that it is not as cool a visual as helicopter landings on board interdicted ships that DoD has been putting out.

(15,164 posts)it might be better just to give other countries cash payments so they can buy it cheaper.
It would certainly mean fewer U.S. troops in danger of being wounded or killed.

(12,837 posts)Some of the online marine trade websites have already mentioned that was happening, the vessels are transiting with their identification system off and hugging the Omani Coast while the US provides overwatch at a distance, they aren't publicizing it, no sence giving the Iranians free info or bad PR that they would want to act against.

(12,837 posts)But more likely doing what they are currently doing which is overwatch of vessels transiting the Straits

(12,837 posts)Which they aren't publicizing, let the Iranians think they have it blocked while up to 20 vessels are actually transiting it daily now.
Even if Iranians know they can pretend they are still blocking it for local consumption

(8,578 posts)My goodness!
Your speculation is based on nothing as well: you have no idea in what circumstances this helicopter was struck, this talking point about the US military moving ships through the Strait notwithstanding.

Naval Overwatch: Rather than utilizing heavy, resource-intensive physical escorts, US Central Command (CENTCOM) provides quiet guidance and intelligence -Fortune.
Threat Detection: The US military uses drones, helicopters, and radar to watch for Iranian threats, communicating directly with commercial ships to coordinate safe passage- New York Times.
Routing Tactics: Vessels are directed to hug the southern Omani coast to avoid potential Iranian mines and coastal blockades, often traveling with their tracking transponders (AIS) turned off -Fortune.

Point blank: I think we should know the circumstances in which this helicopter was shot down. You do not know the circumstances.
