The UFC Freedom 250 event on the White House lawn was pushed back one hour due to bad weather on Sunday, forcing thousands of fans to wait a bit longer to watch the much-publicized fights that President Donald Trump and UFC boss Dana White put together.
Freedom 250 was set to start at 8:00 p.m. ET. But that got bumped back to 9:00 p.m., due to looming thunderstorms.
Things were trending that way earlier, when The Weather Channel reported the event was facing chaotic weather that included a 60% chance of thunderstorms, heavy downpours, and wind gusts up to 34 miles per hour.
On top of the storm risk, brutal D.C. humidity is driving a triple-digit heat index alongside massive swarms of mosquitos and gnats that fighters will have to battle inside the cage, TWC added on X. While the venues massive 92-foot overhang will keep the octagon dry, a single lightning strike within eight miles will trigger an automatic 30-minute freeze on the entire event.

When the storms came through here in Philly, I got over 2 1/4" of rain between 11 pm and 1 am. There is still some flooding in the area, particularly around the flashier creeks in Delaware County just outside of Philly.

(46,322 posts)DC-area thunderstorms are extremely unpredictable. They sometimes pop up with little warning and sometimes don't show up at all, even when forecast.
So the weather wasnt even bad and they still didnt go on with the show?

(46,322 posts)I don't think the delay amounted to a hill of beans.

I think all the obsessing over the weather is silly. Folks were so convinced it was going to totally disrupt the event. It didn't. BFD. The event was egregious period. Everything else is just noise.

Im speaking largely of t he White House and social media thugs. But many UFC organizers also delivered the same narrative which probably conflicted with official statements.

(173,111 posts)State College, PA, and Mt. Holly, NJ CWAs (County Warning Areas) as the storms had a history of formation of severe cells, including a confirmed tornado along the line of convection that formed on a cold front that ran down from PA, through MD and into VA.

I think it's silly when you have people dismissing severe weather potential - particularly when lighting is in the forecast (I have been down there many times over 30 years during the warmer months and there is something about the topography that can enhance the storms). And because D.C. Is a relatively "flat" city, features like the Washington Monument are something that naturally get hit (with the electricity then grounded).
So it IS a BFD, as storms that can produce super cells should be treated as such.
