Report: Iran Delays U.S. Peace Talks Over Israeli Attacks in Lebanon

Source: Maritime Executive

On Thursday, U.S. Central Command confirmed that it has officially lifted the American blockade on Iranian seaports, and is allowing all Iranian trade to pass freely in accordance with the new U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding. Simultaneously, Iranian negotiators have reportedly suspended plans to attend the next round of talks in Switzerland because of ongoing Israeli strikes in Lebanon, throwing the new MOU into doubt just as it enters into force.

Iranian outlet Fars reports that Tehran has decided to put the core element of the MOU - a 60-day negotiating period on a broad portfolio of subjects, including the Iranian nuclear program - on hold. Its rationale is an alleged breach of the deal's first paragraph: Iran secured a pledge from the U.S. that the ceasefire would include a halt to all hostilities, including Israeli hostilities in Lebanon against Iranian proxy group Hezbollah, a designated foreign terrorist organization. Israel continues to strike targets in southern Lebanon, including attacks on Thursday in Kfar Tebnit and Zabadin that resulted in three deaths.

Iran considers these Israeli strikes a violation of the entire MOU - but Israel is not a party to the agreement, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu refuses to be bound by a deal that he believes is not in his nation's interests. In the MOU's text, peace in Lebanon is part of the American end of the bargain; delivering it will require the U.S. to convince Israel to alter its military strategy.

The official agreement signing was to take place on Friday and it looks like not everyone is showing up, including Iran.

Israel is already occupying territory in Lebanon, I doubt it plans on returning it.

Looks like Iran isn't accepting Krasnov's surrender.

The US and Iran have postponed the start of their negotiations over a permanent peace deal and restricting the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program.

It’s uncertain why the talks, meant to be held in Switzerland on Friday, have been delayed, though Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah militants clashed overnight in southern Lebanon. Iran has insisted on a ceasefire in Lebanon as part of an interim deal with the US finalized this week.

Neither is it clear if the developments will affect the Strait of Hormuz, where maritime traffic has picked up since US President Donald Trump and Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian signed the agreement on Wednesday.

The fighting in Lebanon was deadlier than usual, with the Israeli military saying four of its soldiers were killed, including a battalion commander. Israel’s attacks killed 18 people, Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported.

it is pretty evident that it is not in Hezbollah's interest to have any agreement between the US and Iran be successful, and no doubt Israel probably has similar sentiments since Trump has said he has no problem with Iran having ballistic missiles and since Iran has been a supplier of arms to Hezbollah and the Houthis.

By Trump unilaterally deciding that it was a good idea to attack Iran, probably created the the biggest foreign policy blunder since the Viet Nam War.

WASHINGTON/DUBAI, June 19 (Reuters) - Switzerland said U.S. talks with Iranian negotiators on a pact to end the Middle East conflict would not take place on Friday, as Vice President JD Vance dropped plans to travel to the country, adding to uncertainty whether a ‌lasting truce can be found.

"The logistics of these negotiations have never been simple or predictable," the White House spokesperson said in a statement on Thursday night. Vance and the U.S. delegation had been ready ‌to depart as soon as plans were finalised.

The talks, set for the mountaintop resort of Burgenstock, would not take place, Switzerland's foreign ministry confirmed, but gave no details.

There was no immediate response from Iran, which had earlier said it was ready to begin technical talks after Wednesday's 14-point accord extended a tenuous ceasefire by at least 60 days.
