Sen. Mitch McConnell was "unconscious" at his Washington home when he was rushed to the hospital more than two weeks ago, according to EMS radio traffic circulating online, Punchbowl News reported.
Just before 9 a.m. on June 14, a dispatcher sent an Advanced Life Support ambulance to the home of the former Senate GOP leader, according to the audio, which was posted by journalist Desiree Townsend. The account has not been independently confirmed, and McConnell's office has not addressed it.
Later that day, McConnell's spokesperson said the 84-year-old Kentucky Republican was hospitalized and "receiving excellent care." A June 22 statement said he was "working closely with staff on Senate business and Kentucky matters as he continues his recovery," and a member of his team said June 30 that he was still recovering and working with staff.
His office has released no details on his condition or prognosis, and it is unclear whether he remains hospitalized. Senate Majority Leader John Thune has said he spoke with his predecessor, calling him still "dialed in" on Senate business. The chamber reconvenes July 13, by which point it will have been nearly a month since he was hospitalized.

(3,538 posts)In Kentucky, I think the legislature, not the governor or the people, choose a succeeding Senator a change the vile legislature made when Bashear (D) was elected governor. So the legislators are perhaps scrambling to find a consensus on McTurtles would-be successor.

McConnell tried to bully Gov. Beshear into agreeing that the "replacement" Senator would be guaranteed to be GOP. I don't think the Governor went along with that.

reminds me of the bad old days of the Cold War and the USSR, particularly the way their heavy-handed propaganda system attempted to hide the deaths of their leaders (sometimes for weeks). By the 80s, this had become so commonplace that it was used as a plot point in the Cold War drama The Americans.
I guess my memory of those times might be one of the purported benefits of now being of a certain age. I worry that our own political system is now taking on some of the characteristics of the old Soviet gerontocracy.
