The Trump administration is preparing a list of Spanish goods to potentially embargo, after President Donald Trump ordered officials to cut off trade with the European nation Thursday morning. The Treasury Department will be working with the U.S. trade representative and Commerce Department to provide Trump a menu of Spanish products that may be embargoed in the coming days, a U.S.official said via email.
Such a move would potentially blow up the trade deal the U.S. struck with the European Union last year. Spain is a member of the 27-country bloc. The European Parliament recently passed legislation implementing the terms of the deal that includes a clause allowing the bloc to pull out if any breach of what is known as the Turnberry Agreement.
The process of putting tariffs on stuff from Spain is not that hard, said Chad Bown, former chief economist for the State Department under President Joe Biden. What would this mean for the Turnberry Deal? I think it would be devastating for that
[it] would probably spell the end of that agreement.
Trump issued the call to block trade with Spain Wednesday morning in Ankara, Turkey, on the sidelines of the NATO Summit, citing Madrids refusal to endorse the transatlantic alliances mandate for member countries to spend 5 percent of GDP on defense by 2035.

(3,399 posts)We all know perfectly well that any company that needs to transact with Spain will do so, just as soon as they have sent Trump a million dollars theough one of his many money laundering vehicles.
Remember when Gov. Blagojevich wnent to prison for one single act. Trump has sold over 100 pardons for starters. Then there are all the cases where Apple and hundreds of other companies have put millions into meme coins, the ballroom fund, Trump sneakers, the inaugural fund or whatever to buy what they want from Trump. EVERYTHING is a transaction with Trump. THere are no principles, ever.

Why does it matter that Trump ordered an end to U.S. trade with Spain?

In part because he canât do that, and in part because he clearly doesnât know that he canât do that.

But perhaps most importantly, Trump has talked more than once in recent months about ending all trade between the United States and Spain. He brought it up unprompted at multiple White House events shortly after the war with Iran began, following a dispute over the U.S. militarys use of Spanish air bases.
This week, he did it again during the NATO summit in Turkey.
Trump: "Spain is a wasted cause. We don't want to do any trade business with Spain anymore, by the way. I'd like to cut it off. Spain is a terrible partner in NATO. Cut off all trade with Spain, please. Including visits. We don't want anything to do. They're hopeless. Bad people."

In other words, the White House cant single out Spain for some kind of trade embargo without affecting the rest of the European Union, which is a fight the administration has been reluctant to pick.
As for Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who shrugged off the American presidents latest threat, theres a broader dynamic the White House might not fully appreciate. Trump is wildly unpopular in Spain, and every time the Republican lashes out at the country, Sánchez reaps the political benefits.
All things considered, the Spanish prime minister probably hopes that Trump will keep making threats.
