Rubio says US will dismantle ICC 'brick by brick'
Source: Middle East Eye
"US Secretary of State Marco Rubio says the Trump administration is working to dismantle the [International Criminal Court] brick by brick, throwing down a public gauntlet to the court that issued an arrest warrant in 2024 for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The ICCs interfering with American military and law enforcement operations isnt just only a grave overreach of its purported authorities. It would mean the death of the US as a sovereign and independent nation, Rubio wrote in an opinion article published by The Wall Street Journal on Monday.
"Using all the tools at our governments disposal, working beside every ally with whom we can make common cause, we will dismantle the ICC - brick by brick, if necessary," he said.
Rubio also filmed a monologue on the issue, which was released on X on Monday, in which he accused the court of trying to take away Americans' rights to abide by their own laws and stand in front of a jury of their peers when accused of committing a crime. "

I know the USA has never been a fan of the ICC because of fear of our people being prosecuted. But "dismantling the ICC" is truly evil. All to protect Netanyahu and our own war criminals.

(10,521 posts)I mean, the US has been quite successfully damaging the ICC by imposing sanctions on individuals involved in ICC investigations, which is to say, by basically cutting judges and others working for the ICC off from the global credit card and banking system routed through the US

Like Rubio is very very evil but he is not making an empty threat to be laughed at - the US is in fact rather successfully using its position in the global economic system to destroy the ICC, for the benefit of itself and its ally israel

(306 posts)We should be running the US in such a manner that we're not afraid of the ICC and turning over our war criminals to face justice. That we pretend to be above international law is a stomach-churning scandal.
For reference, a map of the member countries.

GMFB. The ICC is not under the US jurisdiction. In fact, we dont recognize them. And the EU will NEVER EVER accept its dissolution.

As of May 2026, there are 125 states parties to the Rome Statute.[1]
https://treaties.un.org/Pages/ViewDetails.aspx?src=TREATY&mtdsg_no=XVIII-10&chapter=18&clang=_en
The Rome Statute obliges states parties to cooperate with the Court in the investigation and prosecution of crimes, including the arrest and surrender of suspects.[15] Part 9 of the Statute requires all states parties to ensure that there are procedures available under their national law for all of the forms of cooperation which are specified under this Part.[16]
Under the Rome Statute's complementarity principle, the Court only has jurisdiction over cases where the relevant state is unwilling or unable to investigate and, if appropriate, prosecute the case itself. Therefore, many states parties have implemented national legislation to provide for the investigation and prosecution of crimes that fall under the jurisdiction of the Court.[17]
As of October 2024, 68 states have adopted at least one piece of complementarity legislation, 59 have adopted at least one cooperation law, 52 have adopted neither, and 55 have adopted both, whereas 13 have implemented complementarity only and 4 have implemented cooperation only.[18]
