The Trump administration warned Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders Friday that they have only a short time left to self-deport before their legal status officially lapses, following the U.S. Supreme Court's decision on terminating the protections.
The statement from the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) General Counsel, James Percival, came as thousands of immigrants with the status, from countries including Haiti and Syria, have been left in limbo in recent weeks, even as their work permits remain valid.
Percival said that this was down to lower courts not yet having acted on the Supreme Court's ruling, and that the suggestion that work permits had been extended could not be "further from the truth."
"For those with an expiring TPS designation, these final days provide one last opportunity to accept $2,600 and a free flight home," he said on X. "We strongly suggest you take advantage of this generous offer."
