Seven Stages of Dementia Before Death
Stage 5
Most patients arent diagnosed with dementia until they have reached stage 5. Stage 5 can last from 2- 4 years and from stage 5 onward, the patient can no longer function without at least some assistance.
Other symptoms include:
Pronounced memory loss including important details such as addresses or phone numbers.
They may remember their own name and the names of their children and spouse but struggle to remember the names of their grandchildren.
Wandering
Confusing the time of day, day of the week, date or season.
Reduced mental acuity and difficulty with problem-solving.

He was definitely into stage 5, my sister put him in a horrible place for the last year of his life...He's "lucky" he got Covid, which led to gallbladder shut down and sepsis....who knows how much longer she would have left him there

(267 posts)Back in the day, when home phones were the norm, I would agree that testing someone's ability to recall numbers was a good memory check. However, with smartphones, I don't know any numbers like that anymore
I still remember my mom and dad's, my best two friends' home phones and I'm 62

(113,701 posts)I'd put him at 3, at the mos.. From time to time, he seems quite in control and normal (for him). I do think he's lost his ability to read and remember. He confabulates, he perseverates. Hr does remember things like mo9vie ploits, confuses them with newscasts.
People around him can blow off Stage 3 as lapses due to fatigue combined with age, which is exactly what is happening with many of his staff and all of his fan club.
Stage 5 is severely impaired, no one can manage to blow it off since the person starts to get apathetic about many things, some of which Fats is still clearly obsessed with, like his appearance, although he is demonstrably unable to do the whole job of getting ready by himself.
During his first term, he moved around the edge of stage 1, generally compensating but with declining vocabulary. People watching video of him from 10 years prior would notice the difference (if they knew what they were looking for) but most would not have identified it as ementia. His rallies were different, I agree he was likely high as a kite on something or other, making assessment useless beyond "this guy is wacko."

(66,583 posts)But I have just finished creating my Wall of Women which I have titled "And Still We Rise," after the Angelou poem (her portrait is on my Wall, photo by Annie Liebowitz).
I am preparing a showing here on DU, my tech guy is finishing it now. The music will be a piano rendering of "O Mio Babbino Caro" by Puccini. There are 19 images ranging from Botticelli to Dorothea Lange. At the end I will provide a credit roll so folks can see who did what.
It's too big to email to my kids so we'll figure out another way to give them access.
