Fascism For First Time Founders (TechDirt)
https://www.techdirt.com/2025/07/17/fascism-for-first-time-founders/Fascinating discussion of what happens when tech innovators suck up to authoritarian dictators.
The logic might seem compelling at first: regulations slow us down, politicians dont understand tech, wouldnt it be better if someone who gets it could just cut through all the bureaucratic nonsense? But this line of thinking leads directly to the neoreactionary conclusion that what we really need is a tech-friendly strongman to sweep away democratic institutions and let the smart people (spoiler: they mean themselves) run things.
It seems like it might be useful to point out how incredibly dangerous and counterproductive that utter nonsense is. The idea of a benevolent dictator to get past the nonsense is appealing for those who cant think more than a step or two ahead and consider what happens next.
Look, I get it. Youre building something cool. You heard the stories some are telling of the Biden admin looking to regulate crypto or AI (not that any such regulations ever actually appeared) and you think ugh, too heavy handed, just let me code. And then you hear Trump promising to cut red tape and unleash American innovation, and you think: Finally, someone who gets it, someone who will stay out of my way.

(534 posts)It opens with arguing that entrepreneurs want fascism, then the article points out all the reasons that fascism is bad for innovators. All those people working 80 hours a week for years for virtually compensation, with the hope that someday their idea will turn into something, have figured out for the most part that they need Rule of Law and property rights or they are wasting their time.
The Brain Drain is VERY VERY VERY real, and should be written about more. A lot of entrepreneurs are simply not going to take the risk of "tails you win, heads I lose" capitalism that exists in places like Russia and China, where anyone creating anything of value will wake up one day and find they have new partners, or else. Once this exodus speeds up, there is no reversing it.

(4,815 posts)Its not a strawman. As he says, there is a groundswell of tech innovators jumping on the Trump wagon exactly because they think hell remove all those pesky regulations that tie their hands. The brain drain *is* real and is worth of its own article. That doesnt make it any less real or dire that tech bros are lining up for fascism.

(534 posts)It is ridiculous to argue that all, or even a majority, want fascism. They understand the consequences of fascism very clearly. While the big names the support Trump have a big platform and get a lot of attention, Tech as a whole is our ally, at least until we chase it away.
