Trump says US court ruling against tariff authority 'would be 1929 all over again'

(Yahoo Finance) President Trump on Friday said a potential US court ruling denying his authority to impose a wide range of global tariffs could have devastating impacts on the US economy.

"If a Radical Left Court ruled against us at this late date, in an attempt to bring down or disturb the largest amount of money, wealth creation and influence the U.S.A. has ever seen, it would be impossible to ever recover, or pay back, these massive sums of money and honor," Trump said in a post on Truth Social. "It would be 1929 all over again, a GREAT DEPRESSION!"

Data from the Treasury Department showed the government brought in $26.6 billion in customs duties in June, an increase from $22.2 billion in May, bringing the tally for the government's fiscal year to $108 billion. Final figures from Treasury for July's tariff-related haul are expected next week. A court ruling could force the government to pay back these receipts.

Multiple challenges to Trump's tariffs are pending in US federal courts, specifically related to the president's use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act or "IEEPA," which says presidents have authority to "regulate importation" to address a national economic emergency.

The reason the economy collapsed from my tariff policies is the tariffs weren't high enough? Liberals did this?

This man is deluded. Not that MAGA won't believe him.

If the tariffs goes away so does his golden goose. However, should he decide to really emulate 1929 I would pay to watch him jump from a window at Trump tower.

In a very strange way, maybe this is progress?

if it were to end it is not the usual tax cut that republicans like.

At the current revenue ( from us citizens ), it would account for maybe 10% of the budget per year.

The resulting inflationary costs will increase unemployment as businesses strive to keep revenue and profit margins.

A downward spiral, higher prices bringing unemployment, more poverty, ever increasing deficits will cause the Fed to raise interest rates... a recession and possible depression follows.

8. For those readers and lurkers, the Smoot Hawley Bill made things worse

The Great Depression may have started in 1929, but the Smoot Hawley tariff bill passed in 1930 made things far worse than they could have been. It devastated international trade and caused more job losses and factory closings.

And that was back when most US manufacturing was done here in the US, not outsourced abroad.

Right-wing lurkers should take heed. Our country’s economic policies are being dictated by a cable of economic ignoramuses headed by a con-man who’s way over his depth. Maybe you all should start looking after your own interests instead of voting for guys who want to make billionaires even richer and endorsed by Holy Joes and Praying Janies who think that the world is ending the day after tomorrow.

Even if you don’t like liberals and think that the End-timers are onto something, you and your family still need to have food on the table, clothes to wear, and shelter from winter’s blast and summer’s heat until the days, weeks, months, and YEARS until it actually DOES end.

12. $109 billion is a pitifully tiny amount of revenue from tariffs.

And note that covers 3/4 of the fiscal year, which ends on September 30. Even if you project June's total across 12 months, that's an annual revenue of just $310 billion. The total revenue for the Federal Government in 2024 was $4.9 Trillion so that would project tariff revenues at just 6.5% of total revenues. And while there may be additional tariffs in future months, the higher the tariff rates, the lower the amount of goods being imported meaning the tariffs will be collected on smaller levels of goods meaning they will never bring in anywhere near is much as Trump thinks.

As of right now, the tariffs project as a tax increase of over $2100 annually for the average taxpayer. And somehow, Trump believes that eliminating a tax bill of $2100 for every taxpayer would cause a depression? As if we needed any more evidence of how stupid Trump is.
