States where you can get a COVID vaccine at CVS following RFK Jr. changes

Jason Lalljee
COVID-19 vaccine availability at CVS pharmacies

As of Aug. 29, 2025

COVID vaccines are no longer available at CVS pharmacies in Massachusetts, Nevada, and New Mexico, the chain told Axios. COVID vaccines are no longer available at CVS stores in three states and available only with an authorized prescriber's prescription in 13 states and the District of Columbia, CVS told Axios on Friday.

Why it matters: Following Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s major curtailing of COVID vaccine eligibility on Wednesday, many Americans are left confused about whether and how they'll be able to get shots amid a surging "stratus" variant.

Driving the news: Amy Thibault, a spokesperson for CVS, said the "current regulatory environment" means that CVS is offering vaccinations in 34 states, offering them only with prescriber authorization in 13 others and D.C., and completely barring access in three.

Those lists "may change at any time," Thibault said.
Following RFK Jr.'s announcement, The New York Times reported that CVS and Walgreens, the country's two largest pharmacies, restricted vaccines in more than a dozen states.

I remember when my husband had his first stem cell transplant and they wanted anyone in the family, or those visiting to have their flu shots, this was pre-covid. He had to get various vaccinations again, as if he were a child, we were told. They had destroyed his immune twice for the transplant.

People need to think about how their decisions might affect others around them, a virus they might be able to fight off could be a death sentence for someone else.

Hoping that everyone who wants a vaccine can get one and not be constrained by a law or the need to pay out of of pocket. We're headed for a rocky time.

Be well and watch out for others.

It always bothered us that so few people here would wear masks when out in public. If they don't care enough about their neighbors to actively try to slow disease spread, they are pretty awful, whiny brats. We are going back into 'hermit mode' but still going to local protests, outside of course.

Read that one of the things that can get you the okay to get the jab (when it’s finally here—September?) is to say you’re a smoker, past or present. That raises your comorbidities to “prove” you require protection—and there’s no way they can disprove it, even if you’ve never smoked.
