Can Someone Like Marjorie Taylor Greene Really Change?

Mike Nellis

badly want to believe in the power of people to change, grow, and evolve from this tense political moment we’re in—but I just can’t shake the feeling that Marjorie Taylor Greene is completely and totally full of shit.

There’s this furious debate online about whether MTG has actually broken away from Trumpism, or if it’s just a cynical attempt to run for president because she sees the writing on the wall: Trump is falling apart over Epstein, the economy, and his corruption. My guess? It’s the more cynical version. And maybe it’s just the political consultant in me, but I can very plainly see a path for Marjorie Taylor Greene to try and carve out a lane for herself—to become some kind of power broker inside whatever new coalition the Republicans try to build to win in 2028.

I could definitely see her teaming up with someone like Tucker Carlson, who in his own way is also breaking from MAGA and trying to define his own identity for a future presidential run. But that’s a rant for another time.

I think about all this in the context of my buddy Joe Walsh—a former Tea Party congressman from the great state of Illinois. He and I do a weekly show, Welcome To The Party, Pal!, every Friday. He’s by far one of my favorite people in this space. I told Joe when we first met: Don’t look up my tweets from 20 years ago—I can’t imagine they were flattering to you. We both had a good laugh about it.

1. I guess I'm just too cynical to give her any credit for evolving.

I just think that she is one of the growing number of GOPers who have spotted the 300ft wave on the horizon... notice the tide is going out... and desperately want to get on top of that wave.

She want's to be first... and yes.*shudders* she wants to be President.

I believe that all but a tiny sliver of people who profess having ‘seen the light’ or otherwise changed behavior or views that society holds in high disdain (like MAGAtry) will revert to their previous behaviors once the pressure to change bad behavior relents. At her core, you know what she is.

Along with those perks that we will never get.
Like Medical care, retirement.etc.
A lot of R's are coming to the conclusion that the Trump train's gravy might not flow to them.
Time to be "For The People!"

do and say whatever she thinks she needs to get to her goal. The problem is, she doesn't have any insight that she is not as well liked as she thinks.

When you've been a shit-kicking redneck (redacted) for 51 years, change is highly unlikely.

It's unlikely across the 51-year-old universe, for that matter, but even more unlikely here.

...which was already perceived as a misogynist outfit, it's not a wild thought for a GOP female politician to think there could be a pathway to success by fighting the men in her party. And if the electorate could put a lying sexual predator ignoramus in the White House, who doesn't have a chance? At this point, I think she has a better chance of being Minority Leader than Little Moses Johnson or any of the other folks currently in House leadership. Looking like a sensible Conservative from that platform could be a stepping stone if she has presidential ambitions.

I think this is where she's going.

usually not overnight - especially when you are coming from the extremes (cruelty, nastiness, bullying, QAnon, complete Trump worshipper/sycophant, etc.) A person with no compassion or empathy doesn't suddenly become a sweet and caring human being unless something life changing happens to them personally. She knows she cannot win a higher office (outside of her safe, bright red district) with her loud, awful, unlikable personality. So, she's gone soft and compassionate but notice how she always needs a camera in front to her play this new and improved Marge.

Notice how she took the time to play the victim during her speech supporting the REAL victims. She's been sooo persecuted for standing up for those real victims. She couldn't just shut up about her sacrifices to do the right thing and make the day about those Epstein victims. Liz Cheney she is not. Liz knew that she was likely sacrificing her career to do the right thing on Jan 6th. MTG knows that she is likely advancing her career by doing the right thing.

Big difference. And I for one, am sick of seeing her phony face on the news every 10 minutes when she is not doing anything that every Democrat has already been doing. End Rant.

What are the chances of that happening? Slim ... in my humble opinion.

Don't forget that she started out 10+ years ago with a microphone spouting all the nonsense she found on Q-Anon. Maybe she's past that, I don't know. She seems to realize now that it's sometimes better to NOT be in the news repeating the latest crazy rumors.

Trump used to be a pro choice Democrat. Though, I doubt he believes half the crap he spews, especially the religious nonsense. MTG wasn’t always like this, either.

MTG figured out how to get attention and now everyone, no matter what their political beliefs, knows who she is. Can’t say that about most members of Congress. Would anyone here recognize Kevin Kiley in a line up? Love her or hate her, MTG is good at playing the political game.

Still, I have no idea why she resigned. Even if she was primaried, her seat was probably safe. Maybe, she’ll get her own show on Fox or be a regular guest on the dozens of opinion shows on cable TV.
