Republicans Should Shut the Hell Up About Swalwell

Julie Roginsky

Republicans making hay over Eric Swalwell should sit down and shut up.

That is not a defense of Swalwell. He had no business serving in Congress, running for governor, or asking anyone to trust him with power. Five women have now accused him of misconduct, including allegations serious enough to trigger criminal investigations on both coasts. Good riddance and may justice take its course.

-snip-

This is a party that cannot even muster basic courage when the accused man is Donald Trump, even after a jury found him liable for sexually abusing and defaming E. Jean Carroll and the appeals courts left those judgments in place.

Carroll is not some isolated footnote Republicans can wave away. Almost thirty women have publicly accused Trump of sexual misconduct. Where has this moral urgency been when it comes to Trump? Where are the Republicans demanding that Trump remove himself from public life? Where are the anguished declarations that the dignity of women matters more than party? Where are the calls for him to resign?

They both have disgraced their families, constituents and their oaths and need to be held accountable

It's heartbreaking. Swalwell had such a bright, promising future. As my husband said, "he dicked up". Sad, but true.

Swalwell is done, he’s gone. He did what any politician should do when faced with credible allegations of sexual misconduct — he resigned. The justice system will ultimately determine his guilt or innocence, but his political career is over.

So if Republicans want to wave him around like some kind of “gotcha,” it seems to me that all they’re doing is reminding people of the way the system SHOULD work, and drawing attention to that fact that many politicians on their side, up to and including the Secretary of Defense (sorry, “War”) and the President, have faced similar allegations and are still in their jobs, when maybe they shouldn’t be.

The rules do not apply. They support a 34 time convicted felon without a second thought. When I think of what the Democratic leadership did to Al Franken I want to rub their collective noses in shit.
