The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsWhat do you think about people who have to be listening to music ALL THE TIME?
We've all known them. The car radio is going non-stop. There's a shower caddy while they're in the shower. They sleep with a tabletop radio on their bed headboard playing softly through the night. They go for a run and wear headphones or ear buds. They put in their time at work with their desktop computer playing Pandora constantly. They're NEVER not listening to music. You sort of get the feeling that they would start exhibiting withdrawal symptoms if they couldn't be listening to SOMETHING. It's a kind of psychological dependency, similar to a chemical dependency alcohol, nicotine, drugs or a gambling addiction.
I love music, but not ALL THE TIME. Sometimes I enjoy SILENCE. Glorious, blissful, peaceful, serene silence. It's a form of music to me, too.
I gave a ride to a couple of friends, and the guy complained that I didn't have the radio going. He said he just has to have some tunes while he's wheeling down the road. I told him that I drive an old car and I need to hear the sounds it's making, which was true, but I also wanted to tell him what I said above.
What do y'all think? In the words of the immortal Linda Richman of Saturday Night Live fame, I've given y'all a topic, now, discuss!

(10,253 posts)I feel sorry for those who don't appreciate the beauty in that. I am at my best when I am alone - in silence. To each his own...
same with people who cannot stand their own company - not a good way to live

(48 posts)I love to crank the heaviest rock on the bluetooth in my wife's fancy RAV4. But in my Tacoma, my entire bluetooth/radio module went out a few months ago. A new fuse didn't fix it. But I am rediscovering blessed silence as a result. So I just pick which vehicle suits my mood, loud or quiet.
Ive had a tune in my head and been tapping my feet since as long as I can remember. Always music. Still, I love a good rain in the dark on my porch just as much. Life is balance or its not life fe.

(21,969 posts)a long time. I love walking through our Big Botanic Gardens, and parks. I don't usually have earbuds in w music.
Sometimes I'll have songs, or orchestral music going on in my mind when I'm there. Usually bc I'm feeling very joyful, and relaxed being there. But also my outer ears are listening to the bird songs, sometimes the scuffing of my footwear on sand, tiny pebbles, etc....Nature sounds. 👍
Listen, watch TV, love talking to family & friends.
Might be doing Art or crafts in silence, or w radio talk (MSNBC at night), TV streaming.

(28,401 posts)Simply because I love music.
I don't listen to it during walks in nature or anything like that.
But, I play it at work, in the car, and at home.
I find it easier to think with music than without it.

(1,947 posts)and I have different playlists or artists I listen to depending on what I'm doing. Reading gets one set, needing help to concentrate to edit phots or write to gets a different batch, others for cleaning or yardwork, etc.

(546 posts)To be honest, I tend to like listening to music. When I was working, I'd have the music on low volume and it helped me to be productive. Often, I'd be working by myself and hearing it provided a relief from the silence. I do like to listen to music while taking long walks as well as soft music while reading.
The thing that gets me are the people with the large earphones listening to music while doing something with other people. I'm a bowler and I've seen people wearing the earphones during league bowling. Part of bowling is it is a social sport and wearing the earphones says "Leave me alone." If they want us to leave them alone then they shouldn't be wearing the earphones in a social setting.
