The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsMy copy of "I inherited a mixed animal from uncle living in woods" just arrived from Amazon
Im starting to read it tonight!
For the few who dont know, it was begun 21+ years ago at DU one dark and stormy night by A-Schwarzenegger and became a cult classic here.

Now I know the authors name is Richard Martin, and the only thing that could make this better is if the book was autographed.

(164,041 posts)Unforgettable. Whattapost!
I remember some of those posters fondly.
Who could ever forget the screen name Big McLargehuge? It humbles a person.
It's good to show the world what a truly great post is!
Thanks, Hekate!

(15,778 posts)Yes, many of them are long gone after 21 years, many tombstoned, some literally. And i'm so grateful to all, especially the early responders, because without them the animal and the whole village could have sunk into very swift oblivion.
Pachamama
(17,538 posts)I always wondered what happened to him. His graphics and his humor and his rage.
That is who I often think about and where he went after Katrina and no longer saw him on DU.
A-Schwarzenegger
(15,778 posts)He was in New Orleans? His art portraying right-wing demons was always powerful and true and satisfying. Yes, miss him, miss his art.
Pachamama
(17,538 posts)He and I communicated for awhile and he had been like many people who had to leave the state and stay elsewhere. I know he was having a lot of posts removed and he suddenly stopped posting (or was banned?) and then radio silence.
Have always wondered what happened to him.
Thought your inherited animal could be a swamp rat.

(2,863 posts)I bought a copy when it was mentioned here a few weeks ago.
Even put a review up on Goodreads.
There are few things that make me laugh out loud- this is one of them.

(15,778 posts)Glad you enjoyed it!
A-Schwarzenegger
(15,778 posts)approves of "glorious," which is how he often describes himself.

(21,905 posts)and really enjoy it - the first person is perfect!!
In my childhood - those plums were the special treat!
A-Schwarzenegger
(15,778 posts)personality/voice so easy, like he'd always been in me waiting. Never felt freedom like that before in writing. It wasnt even really writing, it was just putting him on like a coat and becoming him.
KT2000
(21,905 posts)It felt authentic, not put on! Amazing.
A-Schwarzenegger
(15,778 posts)of writing a "book". I was just writing for the fun of it, the pure joy. So no pressure, no expectations, no obstacles to the freedom of my imagination. I think that's what shows in the book.

(2,674 posts)It's like diving into a refreshing mountain lake at the end of the day. I curl up with that INDESCRIBABLE "Yonder" critter and his lovable owner........ and the world and its chaos and fears just disappear for a while.
Thank you, Richard Martin!

(58,846 posts)Well see! Im currently reading this and *love* it. I dont know exactly how to describe this work beyond absolutely delightful. If you love a wonderfully creative use of language and many brilliant but subtle turns of a phrase (A Confederacy of Dunces comes to mind), this is a reading experience for you, DUers.

(15,778 posts)And it is too late to kick this, so dont even try!
Thank you so much, Heidi, your words made my day!
