He probably watched himself on the TV. He even spoke to the public at large.

The voice actor for Ed's spoken lines was Allan "Rocky" Lane, a former B-movie cowboy star.

One day he saw a tee shirt with a fish on it. Above and below the fish were the words 'Trigger Fish'.
'Ole Bob got all confused about that. His reaction was that Trigger was Roy Rogers horse, and not a fish.
