edit: there were two different ppl who voiced the mule and horse.

The voice actor for Ed's spoken lines was Allan "Rocky" Lane, a former B-movie cowboy star.
and he spells allan " the correct" way".
the mules voice was The distinctive voice of Francis was provided by veteran character actor Chill Wills,

(though I can't explain Ed's motive for doing so)

or Wilbur was keeping his own counsel using Ed as a sort of sock puppet.

In any case, we the audience felt privileged being in on a supernatural secret.

Tim and Uncle Martin had a slightly different and more closeted thing going.

One day he saw a tee shirt with a fish on it. Above and below the fish were the words 'Trigger Fish'.
'Ole Bob got all confused about that. His reaction was that Trigger was Roy Rogers horse, and not a fish.
He went from 'a fish is a fish' to 'a horse is a horse' and the rest is where good old Bob went from there.
