[link:Sarah McLachlan was one of the biggest and most consequential singer-songwriters of the ’90s, but her legacy has been a bit overshadowed by the famously sad ASPCA ads that she used to do, the ones with her song “Angel.” Those things are joke magnets, and McLachlan has been a good sport about the phenomenon. Just last month, she parodied those ads when she appeared on the Simpsons season finale, singing about Itchy and Scratchy. For a while now, McLachlan has been working to maintain that legacy; she did a 30th-anniversary tour for her album Fumbling Towards Ecstasy last year. But now, she’s coming back with new music, announcing her first new album in a long time.|

Aimee Mann in the band known as "Til Tuesday" '82 -89 then on her own. Amazing talent, advocate for mental health awareness, and generous mentor to others.

Now does music with Jonathan Coulter.

Joan Jett. Amazing dynamo, always doing all sorts of groundbreaking projects, engaged in social justice work, and always mentoring.

I've seen them both in concert over 12 times each. I have met and talked with Joan, who is a very grounded person, who encourages others to follow their passions. I was close to meeting Aimee Mann, at a small concert venue, but she was not feeling well, which I certainly understand, but was still disappointing.

Both individuals fought the male dominated and heavily misogynistic recording industry and won.

Even Republicans cannot hold raw human potential down. I believe this is our greatest strength and we all have it.

But good is good, regardless. I do love Norah Jones, Lady Gaga, and Beyoncé, and several young female jazz artists are excellent. I grew up with parents who loved every kind of music, and I have a partner who is trained in classical music, but he also had a jazz band. At any moment, on any day, classical music would be playing, followed by Frank Sinatra or Waylon Jennings, which is why your question is both a difficult and excellent one. Love the choices people have made!

I agree that you can't separate the "Heart" singers. They are a unit.

Anyway those are the ones I will listen to and sing along with over and over.

PS China Forbes is the lead singer for Pink Martini. This group sings in 15 languages and are amazing in live concert!!!! We saw them not knowing anything about them and immediately bought every one of their CDs. LOL we only went because it was a social outing with my Sunday School Class and we were WOWED.

I heard she only joined Fleetwood Mac when they wanted to hire her boyfriend, Lindsay Buckingham. He told them that if they wanted him, they had to add her to the band too, so they acquiesced.

I like her solo stuff way more than what she did with them.

I read that when she was told she was then part of Fleetwood Mac, she gave 2 weeks notice at her job...as a waitress...AND FINISHED THOSE 2 WEEKS...and then just went off to her next job as a rock star.

They sang, "Stairway to Heaven," as a tribute to Led Zeppelin (who were in the audience). Robert Plant had tears in his eyes.

Patti's an acquired taste for some but I love her rock fierceness, and sometimes incantory style. Her hits were Because The Night with Bruce, later People Have The Power.
Intro.
For fierceness & incantations: Up There Down There, Glitter In Their Eyes, 25th Floor/HighOn Rebellion.
She also has some lovely melodies & sweetness:
Dream Of Life, Mother Rose

Mavis (of the Staple Singers) is fabulous! Powerful! Saw her live 12+ yr ago

Siouxsee and The Banshees - a band I regret not seeing live. (I saw sooo many!)

Saw Tina(!) when she was w Ike.

And Big Props to among others:
Aretha, Nyro, Grace, Baez, KD, Collins

While not always the biggest fan of the songs - Laura Nyro's voice was wonderful!
Her song "Save The Country"; powerful, and still relevant today (unfortunately), and one I totally loved!

After that, the field gets a little crowded: Joni Mitchell, Annie Haslam, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan... and the list goes on.

As I've observed before, Karen Carpenter is to altos as Joni Mitchell is to sopranos, but like Karen said, the money's in the basement. They both have almost identical ranges, believe it or not.

You may not know of Annie. She has a 6-octave range and is (still) the lead singer of the band Renaissance. Here's a live beard of her basically just having fun and showing off her pipes:

First, they called Aretha the Queen, but for me, she was more of a goddess.

Second, I've been a big fan of Kate Bush for some 40 years. There was a time when I would have happily dumped my wife for a chance at her. She was that beautiful. And an unforgettable voice. My wife knew about this; her alternative was Tom Cruise.

Third, she was known in life as La Divina, the divine one. Maria Callas, the finest soprano to ever grace vinyl in my book.

I didn't see anyone mention Sia. If you think of her only as the singer of "Chandelier", check out "Soon We'll Be Found" or "I'm Still Here."

Among the singers not mentioned above, I adore Elizabeth Fraser (of Cocteau Twins) and Victoria Legrand (of Beach House).

I cannot link to youtube on a company computer, but if you seek out Cocteau Twins Carolyn's Fingers and Beach House Somewhere Tonight you are in for a couple of sonic treats.
