In the 60s, my nephew was one of the first ten children to undergo open heart surgery in the US. I was just a schoolgirl then and remember the fear clearly.
Looking forward to welcoming you back when youre up to posting again. 🌻🫶🏽🌻

(16,098 posts)Praying for you today that you have some peace of mind and lightness. Tomorrow, I will pray for your doctors and your full and speedy recovery. I can't imagine the enormity of what you're facing, but I know personally two people who have had that surgery and both are doing well. May the same be true for you in a very short while.
Sending ginormous hugs.

Try and have an advocate with you, family or friend. It helps.

(37,811 posts)I know it sounds scary having open heart surgery ... but these days such procedures happen like clockwork. There's actually very little risk as long as your other vital signs are good. And they must be looking great, otherwise your doctors would have postponed the surgery.
We should be grateful to be living in the 21st century, with modern medicine to keep us alive and kicking. I know I am, and I suspect that you are too.

(1,429 posts)Your people here on DU had a lot of good things to say. I agree with them all. Push your dark thoughts and fears to the side and only let yourself see the best outcome in your mind. Some heart surgeries are like oil changes these days. You said open heart surgery, that is still a piece of cake for your docs, but, the real work will be healing and pain management after the surgery is done. It will be well worth it when you look back. We will all be looking forward to a report on your well being. Blessings to you.

(3,117 posts)I was just there in February as you well recall and the two things that stand out to this day to me were gifts given from you and others.
1. Go into surgery with a peaceful mind and heart.
2. Feel your underlying gratitude for all that surrounds you right now.

The other benefit thats always available here is, frankly, distraction. It might help take your mind off what youre facing, even if only a little bit, and make you feel supported.
Were pretty good at that, here.

(62 posts)my husband had triple coronary bypass surgery. The prospect is indeed frightening, but the professionals who will make up your medical team are so good at what they do that everything will seem almost routine. My husband was amazed that his pain level was "a piece of cake" compared to other surgeries he has had. He was asking for ice cream soon after the ventilator was removed (he couldn't have any then, of course) and was home in five days.
These surgeries truly are a new lease on life. Many positive thoughts are coming your way, so your job now is to listen to the pros. They will bring you through this and once you're home you can look back and marvel at what you've been through. Best of luck!
