Mounjaro

For the unaware, Mounjaro is a once per week self-injected weight-loss drug.

A few weeks ago, after giving me the good news about my latest round of tests, my cardiologist shared that he'd recently lost over 60 pounds with Mounjaro. He recommended that I look into it, which I have done. So far my only misgiving is the side effects. Ooh, can't wait.

Last week, I joined a gym (Planet Fitness). I haven't exercised for years. I'm nervous about it, mostly because my gait and balance are poor. I'm a constant threat to trip and fall while walking. One of my sisters won't let me walk beside her unless she's holding my arm; the other just says "go get PT before you break bones." I have a video appointment with my PCP on Monday; I'm going to ask her for an order for PT. At the gym, I'll avoid the treadmill and the stair steppers, probably others.

If you're using or have ever used Mounjaro, I'd like to hear about your experience, if you'd care to tell about it. I'd especially like to hear about side effects: what they are, their severity, whether they go away after a time, etc. Thank you.

Would like to take off another 40 but I’m very pleased so far. I just squeaked into Type 2 Diabetes (6.5 A1c) so Medicare pays.
Your appetite will decrease although food still tastes good. I eat a very small lunch like high-protein yogurt and fruit, and a normal dinner (meat, starch, veg). You will get full faster. Stop eating if you’re full or you may get a bellyache.
Side effects: Gastro. At first I had a lot of heartburn but that’s decreased. Doc prescribed Omneprazole (sp?).
Main complaint is constipation and that has not gone away. I take a fiber supplement and a stool softener which helps a LOT but I still poop only every 3 or 4 days. Drink a lot of water.
The injection does not hurt at all because the needle is very fine.
Ask me anything!

I'll be honest, I work a desk job and don't really exercise besides walking my dogs. I recommend making sure you stay on top of your water intake and make sure you get a good amount of fiber, because constipation can be a side effect. I've had some nausea when starting new doses, but that eventually goes away. It's amazing how much it helps with "food noise", I'm not constantly thinking about food. Good luck with it 🙂

...once a week would help you restore your balance.

The balance thing is what takes a lot of elders out. They lose their balance, fall, etc. ungood. So it's great you are doing the gym thing -- stick with it, and you will be glad you did.

They're linked to thyroid cancer and I assume there could be other side effects. As a pharmacy tech, though, I see TONS of people taking these because it seems an easy way out.

I recommend getting your doc’s feelings on the risks vs benefits before you dive in.

Also note that if you have BIG weight loss, your insurance will consider skin surgery to get rid of the flubber to be purely cosmetic and won’t cover it. I recently lost a lot of weight thanks to stress and poverty (our landlord decided he was done mowing two lawns and decided to sell the house we’d rented for 7+ years, and the housing market has NOTHING in our price range, son lost his job thanks to two hurricanes and the park closing for a while, and it took several months to find a crappy duplex to move into…) and am pretty pissed to learn that sad fact. Just when I thought I might finally have recovered my self esteem enough after jettisoning my malignant narcissist of an ex 25 years ago, I’m now resigned to never looking for romance again. *sigh*
