This really happened

Probably almost 15 years ago.

We were coming back from Ocean City. Both sons-in-law left the beach early to go back to work, so our daughters, the kids, my husband and I were all in the van, to go back to our daughter's house and then home. The van was crammed with all of our beach stuff. We took the wrong turn on the way back from the beach and ended up entering NSA HQ, which was one way in and no way to turn around. There was a long line of vehicles, which all had to be checked through, and it looked like we were going to be delayed forever. But a convoy of trucks allowed us to go ahead, and we explained to a guard that we had taken the wrong turn. We had to go to a special area, were questioned, the van checked. A guard asked my daughter for the registration, and she asked me to get it out of the glove box. I realized that on another drive, my son-in-law had privately told me he had a gun in the van, jic. I was horrified to think what would happen if a gun fell out while I was getting the reg. I was so glad that didn't happen! The check took quite awhile, kind of extended because the guard was hitting on my daughter (!) but they finally had a guard from the canine unit come over to escort us out. They were in a vehicle and had a dog in with them. We had the van windows open because it was so hot. We heard the dog barking its head off as we followed the vehicle out. The escort hit their gas and zoomed away, almost as if they were trying to lose us. We almost followed them back into the complex, but luckily 2 of the 4 adults in the van were paying attention and we got back on our way. Turned out that there was a gun in the van, in a hidden compartment. No one else in the van knew it was there, but the dog did. lol I'll never forget the dog barking and the driver screaming 'Shut up!" as they sped back to hq.

I LOVED Mad magazine as a teenager. Picked up every new edition for quite a few years.

I remember when my Dad carried a gun back and forth to his store, because he had been robbed or burgled a few times. He had it laid on the shelf of the back window of the vehicle, so it was visible.

Like a safe or lock-box that is welded to the frame of the vehicle. As long as it is not hidden. Weapons thefts from vehicles are not uncommon.

But I’ll bet at the time you were plenty nervous being stopped like that and then the dog barking and barking! It sounds like something we would do. I hope those soldiers showed their dog more respect than that when going after real criminals. What a nerve racking experience!
