(14,166 posts)Enterprise with Captain Archer is my favor as well.... I listen to the podcasts of D-Con on YouTube...by Dominic Keating and Conner Trinneer..... Malcolm and Trip. Have you seen them?
Rumor is that Scott Bakula came up with a new Star Trek show of the Enterprise when he becomes an Admiral...bring back much of the cast from Enterprise. I guess he was at Star Trek Los Vegas recently...Apparently, he has not been there since 2016 they say....Bakula spoke of this possibility.
Here is a link.....

PJMcK
(24,140 posts)(See what I did there?)
A post-Enterprise show would be interesting especially if the arc focused on the establishment of the Federation and Archer's role in its creation. But since I'm familiar with the vagaries of Hollywood and TV production, I'm not holding my breath.
Although I loved the series, there were two things about Enterprise that disturbed me. First, that insipid song! It was bad enough in its original version used in Seasons 1 & 2 but when they tried to spruce it up by remixing with a backbeat drum track they took a mediocre song and turned it into shit. Just my opinion but I love that when streaming the reruns, I have the option of skipping the intro!
My second complaint has two related parts. From the beginning of the series, the writers glommed onto the maiden voyage storyline the idea of the Temporal Cold War. This was a 3-season sub-plot that never really made any sense and, in the end, they just ditched it so they could move on. Which brings me to Part 2 of my disappointment. After the Xindi story was completed, the writers never figured out where they were going with the show. The WWII story was stupid (gangsters vs. alien-led Nazis?) and the "love-child" between Trip and T'pol was ludicrous. Then the final episode seemed conceived in 10 minutes and then they killed off Trip, (or did they...?).
So, if Bakula-- one of my favorite starship captains-- is going to be in a new series, I'll watch it with enthusiasm while hoping the new writers conquer the problems the earlier show faced.
And please, instrumental themes only!

It's just a takeoff on "Oedipus Rex," with the 't' to indicate I was a newspaper editor at the time I came up with it (for a forum called Testy Copy Editors).
My personal history with "Rex," though, goes back 50 years. It'd take an hour or so to type the whole story on my phone, and it's rather convoluted.
It all started in 1974 with three guys named "Dave" in my expanded gang, and my passion for Dr Pepper...

They also learn to spell by listening to others talk, which is a horrible way to learn to spell. (Remember when teachers and parents told kids to "sound it out"? Yeah, try that with "pterodactyl" or something.)

(74,069 posts)...and the early days of the internet, I was moonlighting at a Chicago university teaching advanced organic chemistry & kinetic rate studies. (Twice a year for the former, once for the latter.)
Everybody on staff got an AOL account for email and the school named all of the "ProfessorXXX" @ AOL.
When I quit doing that and opened up a Hotmail account, I just kept the same moniker.
So, when I came to DU, I just carried it forward.
PJMcK

ProfessorGAC
(74,069 posts)The first 23 years or so I worked in, or ran, a department whose function was to figure out what it would take to convert a 2 liter flask reaction to an 18,000 gallon reactor. (Or a continuous process running 100g per minute to a system running 15,000# per hour.)
The effect of scale on ideal kinetics, the compromises caused by surface to volume ratio, the impact of laminar flow on heat transfer, ways to enhance turbulence, determining mass & heat transfer limitations, and so on.
The last 20 years I ran a group that monitored, analyzed data (process, quality & financial) from processes/products around the world. If something looked wrong or that entropy was setting in, we'd get on a plane & go fix it.
We saved the company and average of 12x what it cost to have us there, year after year. Because of that, they pretty much left us alone, so we were quite independent.
3catwoman3
(27,476 posts)An 8 week summer school course covering 2 semesters of organic chem was one of the worst academic experiences of my life. Ive often wondered if I would have done better taking it over a regular 2 semester schedule.
3catwoman3
(27,476 posts)
and made the mistake of taking 2 semesters of organic chem in 8 weeks of summer school after finishing nursing school that June. Back then, organic was the make or break filter-em-out class. If you didnt get an A, no med school would even look at you. The weekly tests were graded on a curve, and one week the cutoff for a C was 32%!
I passed the course with a C, so that was the end of the med school fantasy.
I didnt realize until the last few days of the class that a number of students in the class, who were getting As were cheating by writing formulas on the legs of their jeans. That would not have occurred to me, and even if it had, I wouldnt have done it. I squeaked out a 70% on the final, which was not graded on a curve. Only time in my life I was ever happy to get a C.
To this day, I dont think getting an A in organic chem has anything to do with whether or not one would be a good doctor.
ProfessorGAC
(74,069 posts)2 semesters of organic in 8 weeks is ridiculous. I'd venture that nobody in the class could have passed the ACS proficiency test.
8 weeks is not enough time to understand more than a superficial knowledge of thing like reaction mechanism names (condensation, Friedel-Crafts, Markonakov...), but not the how or why.
I saw cheating going on too, and I would say at least 2/3rds of them were pre-med.
I agree that knowing organic isn't fundamental to being a physician. However, since it is very hard, it seems the med schools are using it as a way to determine how hard someone is willing to work & their focus.
There are likely other disciplines that would show the same thing (calculus?) but they might not be any more relevant to being a good doctor.
The 10 week terms I taught were a single semester (so, 10 weeks, one term; not 8 weeks 2 terms) and these were all graduate students, so they already got through organic. And, they were unlikely to be taking a full load of classes, but only one or two.
My masters is in organic; my PhD is in physical organic.
3catwoman3
(27,476 posts)My senior year of high school, I took a class called Math 12X. It was a little bit of this, a little bit of that. The last marking period of the class was calculus. The teacher handed us a small, slender black book about the same dimensions as a 5x7 card and said, "Here, this is all self-explanatory." Boy, was she wrong at least for me. Organic was the only C I ever got. The 6 weeks of calculus was the only F I ever got.
I managed a 45 year long career as a pediatric nurse practitioner, with a 4.0 in grad school, so lots of scientific knowledge, and parents of my pediatric patients were often surprised when they realized I was not a doctor.

(24,140 posts)Although you've been posting for, like, forever(!), in the past few years those initials have meant something else.
Near our home on the upper Delaware River, there's an old train station in Cochecton, NY that has a 6-foot tall black bear carved out of a tree trunk guarding the entrance to the depot. At the time, someone put up a sign that read, "Bears' Lives Matter." Since its a pretty red area, the sign disappeared within days.
Grim Chieftain
(501 posts)If I had, it wouldn't be Grim Chieftain. My husband knew I wanted to be back on DU after a long absence, so he took it upon himself to set up an account for me, and chose the name. For the record, I am not grim, nor a chieftain. I am a petite female baby boomer.

This is the only "social media" I use. So I've never had a screen name before. So, if I could have one wish, it would be that the world comes together as one. All the world being there for each other and doing what's best for everyone. No wars, only family. Now that sounds pretty silly. But that childish dream still lives inside me.
But if I took my time, I'm sure I could come up with something cooler. I love the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, there's plenty to work with there.

(245 posts)ScoutHikerDad
(71 posts)I was a Scoutmaster for years back in the day (before slowly growing to hate it, which is a whole other discussion), and went camping and hiking with my family all over both our Appalachian and the Rocky Mountains when my boys were growing up. I'm also a dad to two now-grown sons, thus ScoutHikerDad.

From The Ashes
(2,724 posts)... I was TOhioLiberal. Then life happened: Marriage collapsed, moved to a still somewhat nomalish Texas and decided that 'From the Ashes' described me more accurately so here we are!

(3,168 posts)I can't recall what caused his tantrum but I responded with "you want me to write this down word-for-word, for free?"
He didn't quite get the barb, but my co-worker had to leave the boss' office.
This guy was just like dear leader - and would remind you how he was so smart, wealthy, handsome, and so on. He was none of those things, but he was the owner and paid the bills, so you kept your mouth shut (right up until I couldn't any more).
So when I lost access to my first account here (which was my initials), I decided to pay homage to the dumbass by using his own word.

(23,361 posts)me think of "energetic" (being out there doing stuff, in some fashion as a semi-activist).
68; bc at 15 years old in 1968 what happened blew my mind (in a bad way, obviously), and it was the first time *on my own; doing volunteer work for a candidate - Humphrey. (I would have volunteered for Sen RFK had he made it to our NYS Primary. Deep, sad sigh, even 57 years later)
*I think when I was 12, or 13 my dad had me go with him in our apt building putting political flyers under our neighbor's doors.
sorcrow
(622 posts)The name of the store was Sorghum Crow's General Store. I shortened it to sorcrow for ease of logging in.
I'm not sure if I actually remember Sorghum Crow himself or just created a amalgam of old fellows from that area, a wiry-thin gray-haired guy in bib overalls.
I definitely remember his sorghum mill where the mule walked in circles to drive the mill to crush the cane to extract the juice that ultimately became delicious sorghum syrup.
The last time I saw the store it was long closed and had fallen into disrepair. The sign was barely readable and the building itself was nearly engulfed in kudzu. On a subsequent visit everything was gone having been bulldozed to make way for a subdivision.
I thought Sorghum Crow was an interesting name and just wanted to preserve it in a small way.

(24,140 posts)It is sad to hear of the demise of the store. So many parts of local histories disappear all the time.
Talitha
(7,567 posts)It's at the tip of the front paw of Ursa Major, the Big Bear - the huge northern constellation that contains the Big Dipper.
Quite a number of years ago I participated in an Aurora study run by the University of Michigan. They listed several questions regarding the Auroral display being observed, and one of the questions was "What is the star closest to the horizon that you can still see through the Auroral glow?"
In the north, it turned out to be Talitha - I've liked the name ever since. IIRC, there's also a biblical reference to the name but my interest in it is purely astronomical.
BTW, thanks for starting this discussion PJMcK, very interesting!

(8,757 posts)The character of the person I am alluding to is a good one. (He is still a product of 20th century capitalism, but other than that.)
He is a bold leader and a wise tactician. He is a person who does not judge until he has to.
And, I am a huge Star Trek fan... have been since I watched the original series when I was very tiny.
(I saw 'Charlie X' when I was three years old. I was hooked when that girl came around the corner with no face.)

(24,140 posts)The insanity, inanity and insipidity of our age is infuriating!
I studied very hard in school to have knowledge and judgment. So many Americans today are simply ignorant and uneducated thanks to decades of Republicans' destruction of public education.
The U.S.has become a pathetic example of a failing democracy.
