Do you have a favorite "little-known" movie?

'Little-known' means "not widely known or recognized by many people. It refers to something or someone that is not famous or popular.
It's the opposite of being well-known or famous."

Secondhand Lions,
Fictional, but fun. It captures you over the whole show.

And Bottle Shock.
The true story of the huge success of the Napa Valley in the 1970's against the French wine industry. Very entertaining and if you like excellent wines, a true wake up call to the brilliance of the US wine industry.

It also has Martin Clunes in the role of a local doctor. A role that became the springboard for the Doc Martin series, according to interviews with the principals involved. Clunes' doctor in Saving Grace is less awkward than Doc Martin, but once you know, you can see the germ of the idea in the movie.

Repo Man is a 1984 American science fiction black comedy film written and directed by Alex Cox in his directorial debut. It stars Harry Dean Stanton and Emilio Estevez, with Tracey Walter, Olivia Barash, Sy Richardson, Vonetta McGee, Fox Harris, and Dick Rude among the supporting cast. Set in Los Angeles, the plot concerns a young punk rocker (Estevez) who is recruited by a car repossession agency and gets caught up in the pursuit of a mysterious Chevrolet Malibu that might be connected to extraterrestrials.

Sat Aug 16, 2025, 04:08 AM

The Wall and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly are foreign films. Millennium is a Hollywood science fiction film with Cheryl Ladd and Kris Kristofferson. I read the John Varley novel before I knew they were going to make a movie out of it. These three films never show up on the cable movie channels I get on Mediacom cable. That is the criterion I am using to determine whether they fit in this category. Also the fact that nobody I know has ever seen or even heard of these three films. The first two films are among the best foreign-language films I've ever seen. Millennium is an attempt to make an intelligent science fiction film. I applaud it for the effort, but apparently a lot of people think it doesn't succeed. I disagree with them profoundly.

Rotten Tomatoes gives it a score of 94% based on reviews from 176 critics.

A comedy about Hitler seen through the eyes of a young boy sounds like a risky idea. But it is brilliantly written and acted. Both funny and heartbreaking.

An absolutely flawless German movie. It concerns an utterly vicious Stasi police agent in E. Berlin, and how his life is redeemed by the humane qualities of the people he's surveilling. Too many great scenes to recount, but one that sticks with me is when a room-full of Stasi operatives hear that the Berlin wall is coming down (after a few seconds of considering the enormity of what's happening, they all just put down their listening devices, stand up, and silently walk out of the room). One of those rare movies that makes you feel like a better human being, after you've watched it.

True story. In England, during WWII, a research group asked people to keep diaries of their lives and send them to the group. Five hundred people did, including Nella Last. This 90 minute film from 2006, is from her diary during the war. Rich is the only way I can describe this film.

Two youngsters declare to their parents that they want to get married. Not sometime in the future but as soon as possible. The story is told from the children's point of view.

Great Soundtrack by the Bee Gees along with Crosby, Stills & Nash's "Teach Your Children Well" in the closing scene.

Sitting in the theater, as the credits rolled, I was very tempted to sit through it again. I have it on DVD and have watched it countless times, but if I run across it on tv, I always stop and watch it again. It's a great mash-up of sci-fi, farce, drama, romance, and fantasy.

and a wonderful story based on an E.M. Forster novel. It is a Merchant-Ivory film.

The music running through it is "O Mio Babbio Caro," a lovely aria by Puccini.

It is a love story set in late 19th century and tells the story of a young, upper class British woman on a 19th century visit to Florence and finding love.

This film is gentle on your nerves and feeds your soul with its charm. See it or see it AGAIN. (I've seen it about 10 times since its release in the late 1980s). The kiss in the cornfield scene is passionate and elegant at the same time.

163. I'll never forget "Il Generale Della Rovere."
Sun Aug 17, 2025, 08:22 PM
Sunday

Saw it when was in high school (graduated in 62) It was a WWII movie, mostly in Italian but some German bit with subtitles. Triple-A list European actors from both countries for the title character (sort of) and the German commander.

It's about a con man whose income, like everyone's, has been negatively affected by the war. He bears a resemblance to the General, and is arrested by Germans as being the General. He is coerced into pretending to be the General (since con men can pretend to be anything). His German captors want to use him to identify another important figure in the resistance whom they believe to be in the prison they put him in. His demeanor, behavior, and words help give confidence to other Italian POWs, and seeing the difference he can make makes a difference in him. . In the end, he takes it all the way, is shot by a firing squad after being allowed to speak some inspiring last words and requesting a photo be given to "his" family. If this reminds you of Sydney Carton in "Tale of Two Cities," it did me too. But so many details are different and peculiar to the time make it a very different experience.

It may not be "little-known" in Europe, but it surely is little known here in the States.

"Undercover Blues" It's uproarious fun as Dennis Quaid and Kathleen Turner, ex-U.S. spies turned new parents, are persuaded to take on a case that soon has them juggling dangerous world affairs with diapers and 3 a.m. feedings. Our introduction to Stanley Tucci (he steals every scene he is in)

"Feast of the Seven Fishes" A slice of life story that follows a large Italian family on Christmas Eve as they prepare for the traditional Feast of the Seven Fishes. Big Italian family in West Virginia, featuring an evil-eye casting Grandmother, the uncles who take over the cooking, the bickering, the wine and a sweet love story.

"American Dreamer" 1984 This is a gem. We sat through it twice in the theater (back when you could still do that) Frustrated housewife/writer Cathy Palmer ghostwrites a story about Rebecca Ryan, a dashing international spy, and wins a trip to Paris. While there, she is involved in an accident, and awakens in the hospital believing she IS Rebecca Ryan. Much craziness ensues as she meets the writer of the Rebecca Ryan books, thwarts real international spies, and eventually gets her memory back. starring Tom Conti and JoBeth Williams I would love to find a DVD of this one.

The man hid about a couple dozen Jews in the sewers, along with the rats, trash and sewage. Those people were down there for several years until the war ended. The sanitation worker looked out for them, did what he could to protect them, keep them hidden, bring them fresh water and food. That man was a hero, an Oscar Schindler-like hero. Based on actual correspondence between a New York bibliophile (Bancroft) and the gentlemanly London bookstore owner (Hopkins) who finds what she's looking for. Sweet and sad and a love letter to reading.

Ran - 1984 - Akira Kurosawa's last big movie. Overwhelming - "King Lear" set in feudal Japan. Pride, greed, arrogance and filial duty meet up at the castle and immolate themselves, featuring one of the greatest battle scenes ever filmed. Cool trivia - Nakadai Tatsuya, who plays the Lear character, is the protagonist in "Hara-Kiri" from 1962, one of the greatest demolitions of samurai mythology ever.

The Decline of Civilization Part II - The Metal Years - Penelope Spheeris takes on the LA metal scene in the mid-to-late 1980s. A scabrous, dark and funny documentary.

Starring Malcolm McDowell, Mary Steenburgen, and David Warner.

McDowell play H. G. Wells who hosts a dinner for his friends at the end of 1893. A late guest arrives, Warner playing Dr. John Leslie Stevenson, and Wells shows his guest his invention of the Time Machine and how it works. The police come to Well's house stating Jack the Ripper has killed again and is in the area and they want to search his house. The police find Dr. Stevenson's medical bag with evidence that he's the Ripper. After the police leave, Wells discovers in Time Machine is gone and he realizes Dr. Stevenson used it to escape. The machine returned to it's original location in Well's house and he uses it to travel to where Stevenson ended up, in 1979 San Francisco to terrorize the city. Wells uses his machine to travel to 1979 San Francisco to capture Stevenson and return him to 1893 London. While in San Francisco, he meets Steenburgen and falls in love with her complicating his mission.

This is one of my favorite movies because it blends scifi, drama, comedy, and a love story into one movie.
