(15,956 posts)California Institution for Men in southern California. At that time it was pretty much in the middle of nowhere. Inhumane people always that it was a good place to dump their cats/kittens. Maybe because it had it's own dairy farm? Anyway vector control would just trap them and take them to the animal shelter .
Then someone had the great idea and decided to keep them and let the inmates take care of them during the day and put the cats on mouse duty in the administration building, the oldest building there, at night. It was 3 stories so they'd let to or three cats live on each story. They had food, water and litter boxes. The guards took care of them on the night shift. It was a great win win solution.

(27,300 posts)Cats that will be loved and cared for instead of being euthanized, prisoners who have something to help them chill, and care about.
And they get to start new lives together! I love it!

Especially for the kittens.

(438 posts)is so successful in care homes, hospitals, and recovery and rehab centers, why not prisons. One year, while teaching at a tiny rural school, a stray cat showed up on the porch outside my classroom door that led to the playground. She was obviously pregnant and started coming in and out with the kids. I got permission to keep her as a class pet and it was wonderful. One of my students lived right across from the school and he looked after her on the weekends. She had four kittens and four of my students gave them homes. When summer came, she lived with the family across the street. They became attached to her and when they relocated, she went with them. Another time this same class and I went out to watch a prison crew working on and repairing a lot of the broken playground equipment. They also repainted the fence and the cross walks. The kids were so open and kept chattering away with them. The kids complemented them and kept thanking them and you could tell how glad it made them to do something for the children. One of them painted the fire hydrant to look like a firefighter. The kids loved it and he was proud of it. Cats could provide this atmosphere every day, not to mention the benefits of joy and affection. Thank you for sharing this post. I had never heard of this program.

(8,959 posts)But if other shelters are like the one here there are at least 3 cats for every dog.
I always felt it is better to just release the cats that aren't adopted and are fixed, back into areas where there are plenty of places for shelter and rodents for sustenance.
The last time my daughter brought a couple of cats in she told them if they couldn't find homes to let her know. She has friends with stables that always keep cats around for Rodanthe control and friends for the horses.
