Hubby is coming home from rehab tomorrow!

He's been through a lot since he slipped and fell and the EMT's came to get him to Yale-New Haven Hospital ASAP. It's been over six weeks and he's done so well in rehab he can come home! He fractured his ankle but he had quick help from the hospital team and he really aced the rehab program! He had been depressed and gloomy about his future mobility but I was experiencing real difficulty getting to him to visit and I think he just decided to give it all he had in him to get better!

So grateful to his team at YNHH for giving him such stellar care!

When he is home make sure he gets:

Love

His favorite foods

Enjoyment in what he likes.

Doggies and other family friends time with him.

You have a lot on your plate but I know you can do it.

to help with the transportation if that was the problem.

I've worked a bit in New England and it seems that there are formal as well as informal groups that will give rides in these situations. You might ask at a Council On Aging or a local Senior Center. I'll take people 30-50 miles for appointments and visits - gratis.

People are (sometimes understandably) so disillusioned these days ...
But there really are people out there trying desperately hard to deliver the best kind of care that they can ...

Recognition means a lot (to the sometimes, and again understandably, discouraged). So - thank you! - - - - - - - - - - - -

You probably have heard this, but, just in case . . . he likely will come home with instructions from the therapists to do certain exercises -- exercise, how many repetitions, how many sets, how many times a day. DO THE EXERCISES. Do the exercises the way the therapist taught him to do them and do the number of reps and sets the therapist directed.

You'd be surprised at the number of folks who come home from rehab and figure, well, that's over, I'll just pile up here in my recliner and not worry about that stuff from the therapist. In six weeks, they are back in the hospital.

I'm a retired EMT -- you would not believe the number of people we had to pick up and take to the ER and on the way they would tell me, "well, I had surgery couple of months ago, went through rehab, etc." I would ask them about their PT routine -- "I didn't bother with that, I felt fine when I came home." And on to the ER they went.
