Buddy Guy "ain't done with the blues".

That's the title of his latest Grammy winning 20th studio album and he doesn't make a feeble boast. I've seen Guy maybe five times and although he slowed a bit on stage just before retired from touring, his mastery of the Fender has not shown his 90 years. This is the man who taught Jimi Hendrix to play the guitar behind his head and to pick with his teeth and gave Clapton inspiration to move to the blues. Buddy usually plays a trademark polka dot Strat to remind himself of a lie he told his mother. When he left home for Chicago he promised he would return after he got famous and bring her a polka dot Cadillac.

Of course I bought the disc as soon as I'd heard about it and finally got it in rotation in my car (yes my Caddy is old enough to vote). It features guest appearances from Christone "Kingfish" Ingram, Joe Bonamassa, Joe Walsh, Peter Frampton and The Blind Boys of Alabama. Like most of his peers, artists are honored to contribute to what may be his swan song and indeed this album tells a story of where he's been and what he's done since his early days picking cotton for $2.50 per 100# bag.

This song, "Been There Done That". is a great reflection of those decades on the road. I noticed producer Tom Hambridge really cranked up the bottom and fine tuned the stereo separation to give a more live sound. As usual on a Buddy Guy song, hang in there for the solo. He hasn't lost a thing.

I have a lot of story that I'd like to tell
I've been everywhere, done everything
You might not believe it, but it's true

Picked a lot of cotton, before I picked the guitar
Got myself a tractor before I drove a car
I've flown my own plane to get where I need to go
I've been all around the world, my home is on the road

Been there, done that, stories I can tell
Been there, done that, still alive and well

I played the smoke and juke joints and every concert hall
The rockers and their high rolls just stage it with them all
Kings, queens and presidents, I've seen them come and go
From the palace to The White House, I gave 'em all a show

I've been there and done that, stories I can tell
I've been there and done that, still alive and well
I've been there and done that, stories I can tell
I've been there and done that, still alive and well (still alive and well)

I shake my head and I can't believe the hell that I've been through
My life is like a movie but every scene is true

Been there, done that, stories I can tell
Been there, done that, still alive and well
Been there, done that, stories I can tell
Been there, done that, still alive and well
Still alive and well
I've been there
Stories I can tell
I'm still alive and well
