Tonights PBS Newshour had a great feature about the Jazz Foundation of Americas new program to support longtime American jazz masters who could use some help due to medical issues or just the challenges of trying to make it as a semi-famous jazz master in the U.S.A. (not to mention some pretty nifty tambourine work by New Orleans drummer Herlin Riley).

Several of the first round of 20 Jazz Legacy Fellowship recipients are among my favorites, for example the bassist Reggie Workman, pianist Michele Rosewoman, pianist George Cables, drummer Herlin Riley, saxophonist George Coleman, pianist Amina Claudine Myers, trumpeter Tom Harrell, drummer Billy Hart, vocalist Carmen Lundy, and trombonist Julian Priester.
