This is an image I shot about twenty years ago with one of my first point n' shoot digital cameras. I think it had 2mp. It was a lovely photo, but it had a nice big blemish right in the middle of it caused by some overzealous HDR processing.
I stumbled across it while looking through an old hard drive. I enhanced the file, making it much larger with Topaz PhotoAI, then repaired the big blotch with Photoshop generative fill. I'm going to print it and put it on my wall.
Can you spot the repair?

Kidding, that's a breathtaking image. I'm glad you were able to salvage it. I'd like the see the before pic.

(16,412 posts)I personally avoid AI.
Here is a nasty shadow, thanks to the late sun.
I took it out with GIMP, the free and open source image editor available on all major platforms.
Just to show that free software can do a fine job. These are 1mb. images shrunk for emailing. And my second try with GIMP's healing tool.
Again, a fine photo and recovery. I just wanted to put in a plug for "old style" free software.
And show off.

(3,706 posts)Are you sure Gimp wasn't using a little AI to perform the healing? 😉
(Just kidding).

(16,412 posts)But the interface drives me nuts at times. Version 3 release is almost here (3.0RC3).
I need to be much smarter with layers etc.
The toolbox keeps getting buried under other windows.
I find a way.

I think I see an irregular bluish blob over the rear peak. Maybe that's it?

(3,706 posts)Notice that big ugly blob in the lower right along the canyon floor? I have no idea how that got there, but this was a long time ago and I was new to HDR processing. I guess I got a little overzealous
I put the file into Photoshop and asked it to recreate the canyon floor using generative fill AI. It also added a small rock outcropping below the canyon rim.

(9,539 posts)I used to do it by hand, a little artistry like painting using the clone stamp tool mostly, some taking an hour or more to perfect, now 30 seconds and boom.
I was never an expert with the clone tool, or any of the other tools to be honest. I've been trying to fix this image for years. Now I can print it out and hang it on my wall.

(3,706 posts)It started snowing about the time I took this photo. I drove from the Grand Canyon back to Sedona in a blizzard. Fortunately, having grown up in Wisconsin, driving in a blizzard wasn't that big of a deal. However, my wife and kids were all born in California and had never seen anything like it. I earned some serious dad points that day. LOL!
