Related: About this forumBarely crescent moon, tonight . . .

I've waited all week to capture this moon, but every night has been clouded out. Tonight it was finally clear and I was ready.

(155,352 posts)I was lucky in that there was practically no air stirring tonight. That makes for clear photos! I really enjoy what I do.
And you know I'm glad to be back.

(10,055 posts)i haven't ever tried to photograph the moon with anything other than my cell phone.
i'm assuming you used the olympus.
a few questions, so i can learn:
1. what focal length lens did you use?
2. what were your aperture and shutter speed settings?
3. how did you focus on the moon? did you use auto-focus or did you manually focus or did you just set the lens to infinity?
any other tips or tricks would be interesting for us moon photo wannabes and newbies.....
thanks!

(155,352 posts)I always use my Olympus Mark IV.
1. Focal length: All the way out on my big 100-400mm lens, along with the 2X extender that's in the camera's software.
2. Aperture and shutter speed: F11; 1/30 second.
3. How did I focus? I start by finding the moon -- I point the camera to the sky where the moon is with my lens at 100mm. Hopefully I find it right away! Having found it, I slowly extend the lens to bring it up close. I do the work when it's at 400mm plus the 2X. The lens is already set to infinity. I play with the exposure compensation ring until the image suits me. I know I can always do more in the post-processing. I always use auto-focus and image stabilization. They really help.
Thanks for asking! I hope this helps you.

(10,055 posts)....i figured they were longer exposures, tho i know that too long of an exposure will get some motion blur from the moon spinning.
are you shooting without a tripod?
CaliforniaPeggy
(155,352 posts)The lens is heavy! When I first got it, I could hand-hold it, but no more. I am not as strong as I was even a couple of years ago.

(10,055 posts)...but, yeah, it would seem like a super human effort to handhold it steady enough even with the best stabe in the biz.
