Even before its release, “The Pitt” had been claimed by Pittsburghers as their own. It’s mostly filmed at a studio in California. But from the show’s Allegheny General Hospital-inspired setting to numerous Pittsburgh references across its first season, the HBO Max medical drama has solidified its place among yinzers. [That's a local joke - "yinzers" are Pittsburgh-natives.]

And Season 2 is in the works. From creator R. Scott Gemmill and executive producer John Wells, a Carnegie Mellon University graduate, the Pittsburgh-set medical drama follows the daily struggles of health care workers in an emergency department, the fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center.

“The Pitt” received critical acclaim following its January premiere for its commitment to realism and overall quality — positioning it to possibly grab an Emmy nomination (or several) when they’re announced Tuesday. [Update: "The Pitt" received 13 Emmy nominations!]

What should I look for in ‘The Pitt’s’ 2nd season?
The season is expected to revolve around a Fourth of July weekend — a stretch that can be a busy one for hospitals. (In the lead up to Pittsburgh’s most recent celebrations, public safety officials warned of the potential for heat stroke, dehydration and firework-related injuries.)

Season 1 finished with lingering questions, including the fate of Dr. Langdon’s (Patrick Ball) job after he stole medication from the ER, and whether head nurse Dana Evans (Katherine LaNasa) will follow through on her decision to quit after being punched by an angry patient. “The Pitt’s” first season was praised for its realistic depiction of the challenges faced by physicians in a U.S. emergency room. In a February visit, Noah Wyle met with Pittsburgh doctors, including those who consulted on the show.
