Colette Avital
Former Israeli Lawmaker / Former Israeli Diplomat
From Iran and Lebanon to Israel and the occupied West Bank, the Middle East is in flames. In Lebanon, Israel continues to pound Hezbollah in the south, despite a so-called ceasefire and ongoing talks with the Lebanese government. Authorities say a prominent journalist, Amal Khalil, was killed Wednesday in an Israeli military strike. Khalil is the fourth Lebanese media worker killed since Israel started its offensive in March. Meanwhile, Israeli settlers are ramping up their violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank — often with the security forces looking on, or even participating. Many Israelis support all this war, especially since October 7th — but not all. One key voice of resistance is that of 86-year-old Colette Avital. She is a former Israeli diplomat, Knesset member and Holocaust survivor. Avital joins the show from Tel Aviv.

Bill Weir
Chief Climate Correspondent
Chief climate correspondent Bill Weir marks Earth Day this week from a unique location on a Norwegian island in the Arctic Ocean, with a worrying signal from the top of the planet about the vanishing Arctic sea ice.

Rebecca Solnit
Author, "The Beginning Comes After the End"
Thinking about the state of the world today can trigger a spiral into despair. Conflict is spreading across the globe; climate change threatens our homes and livelihoods, and AI is potentially stealing our jobs. Rebecca Solnit offers an alternative perspective in her new book, "The Beginning Comes after the End." Solnit urges us to see the light through the gloom as she highlights human achievements since the 1960s — including significant progress in decolonization, gender equality and environmentalism. Christiane asked the writer and activist how she stays optimistic in these fraught times.

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna
(R) Florida
and
Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández
(D) New Mexico
A pair of female lawmakers crossed the aisle to force the resignation of two congressmen accused of sexual misconduct. Republican Anna Paulina Luna and Democrat Teresa Leger Fernández argued that the allegations against Eric Swalwell and Tony Gonzales made it impossible for the embattled congressmen to continue to serve effectively. Rep. Luna and Rep. Leger Fernández join the show to discuss accountability and whether their victory might herald a broader push for reform in Congress.
