Doctor Who update

I think this is actually good news. The last few years under Russell T Davies have been worthless.

Earlier this week, the Doctor Who shoe finally dropped. The BBC announced that not only was the planned Christmas 2026 special canceled, but the show’s architect across multiple eras—Russell T Davies, who shepherded Doctor Who from 2005 to 2010 and again from 2023 to 2025—would also be exiting, along with his production company, Bad Wolf.

Of course, I ditched TV years ago and haven’t been able to stay current. Never really moved on after Tom Baker, TBH.

Well we liked many of the David Tennant and Matt Smith shows. Some of the Peter Capaldi ones were worth watching. Sadly most of Jodie Whittaker and Ncuti Gatwa episodes were a struggle to watch even once.

We've never really gotten into watching the classic Doctor Who's (before 2005 / Eccleston). But some of the Tennant & Smith episodes we've rewatched a dozen times

Writing, miscasting? I've seen Jodi's episodes and liked them well enough. I haven't seen Ncuti's episodes. Were did you watch them? Streaming in the US doesn't seem to have the fifteenth doctor. I'd like to see and judge for myself.

How to stream in the US (what a mess!):
Classic Doctor Who's: Britbox (and others, e.g. Tubi)
2005-2022: AMC+
2023-2024: DisneyPlus
Future shows: AMC+?

And I'm not enough of a film critic to do a good job of identifying why I don't like something, but I'm going to guess it's the writing. The characters wind up being people we don't care about, the plots are lame, the morality heavy handed, the resolutions embarrassing. If I had to guess I'd just assert they lowered the target audience to about ten year olds. But I think it might just be the show runner getting distracted and lazy ... without anyone around to tell him when the script sucks.

We used to seriously look forward to new shows with Tennant and Smith(*), and groaned through most of Capaldi's. But watching the new doctors was a chore. We had the same reaction to Torchwood. The series started off great, but by the last season we just wanted to have a mind wipe and forget how much time we'd spent compulsively completing the series.

Just my two-cents. Hope you find them more enjoyable than we did!

(*) to be fair, some of the Tennant and Smith shows were bloody awful too. But some we've rewatched literally a dozen times.

Writing since the the start of Nu-Who. Even with the Doctors he liked. He seems to prefer the classic series. I guess I'm easier to please.

I appreciate your response.
