Three teenagers are among 73 people in San Diego who have died from the flu this season, as Diego County health officials try to promote vaccinations. The teenagers were not vaccinated against the flu this season, health officials said. Neither are 80% of 5- to 17-year-olds in San Diego County, which is far below the national average where 42% of 5- to 17-year-olds nationwide have received this year's flu vaccine. Which is why the flu has been ripping through SD. https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/three-san-diego-county-teens-die-from-the-flu-this-season-health-officials-say/3748011/?fbclid=IwY2xjawIjKYZleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHdB6fOVfpCjkS4hxfHmoccSvHE5XOt7Md9zCl1Sga0hnH7JcLVRz5mxsfQ_aem_g_ilS2gwhFcJGCeciFoZbw

(3,968 posts)Flu is not, however mistakenly, generally recognized as life-threatening, and vaccines are not always easy to get or cheap. I wasnt vaccinated for flu until I was in my 40s, and I got it then to protect an older relative. I wouldnt skip it now!
The trauma of parents who have lost a child isnt something we should ever minimize, much less gloat over.
I appreciate SunSeeker posting this story, which should serve as a useful reminder to unvaccinated folks to get the shot if they can.

(656 posts)The City of San Diego and San Diego County -- Bastion of Rightwing Shit and rightwing idiocy! It's just unfuckingbelievable that in the middle of the second decade of the 21st Century -- that Americans are too fucking stupid to get vaccinations against a disease as serious as Influenza. It just is what it is -- and the certified idiots, Worm Brain and Dr. Oz, are now in charge of Healthcare in the U.S.

(5,093 posts)I got the chance to visit it once, when I was in my 30's, and I fell in love with the city. My sister-in-law and I had so much fun there, and we walked everywhere and never once felt in danger, regardless of the time of day or night.
I always said if ever I could afford to move to CA, it'd be to San Diego or someplace close... if it's now overcrowded with Magats and other far right terrorists, well... that sure puts a change on that wish! (sigh)

San Diego County voted overwhelmingly for Kamala, beating Trump ~16%.

(656 posts)You can even get Influenza vaccinations at the pharmacies in grocery store chains like Ralphs, Von's, Safeway, Albertson's as well as at CVS Pharmacies, Walgreens, Rite Aid. This is the middle of the second decade of the 21st Century. It's not 1950. It's not 1930. It's not 1900. Influenza is easily preventable. There is no excuse for not having these vaccinations in California.

(55,035 posts)He was complaining to me that he still got the flu even though he was vaccinated. So I had to explain to him that the flu vaccines, like the covid vaccines, don't prevent you from being infected, they prevent you from ending up in the hospital...or worse. He's in San Diego. I sent him that article. That shut him up!

(5,093 posts)this was my first year for the pneumonia, but I've gotten flu vax for as many years as I can remember, and plan on getting it each year now that I'm up there in years.
BUT there has been a really bad respiratory bug going around here. I thought I was over it, and then three days later (after I got out in the cold for a change), I came back down with it and worse than it had been before. I don't think I've ever had my nose run so fast and furiously and all the freaking time! Not to mention the cough and sore throat. It almost felt like I had bronchitis. But my doc is 45 minutes away in another city, and I didn't feel like driving all the way there to confirm anything. I'm just keeping an eye on my O2 saturation and trying to stay out of the cold. Hopefully this will go away before the trees and weeds start pollinating and I start all over again... this time will allergies.
There used to be a medicine (prescription) called Hismanal. Taking it, I experienced life for the first time in forever without a runny nose and cough. It was an allergy wonder drug for me. And of course, they took it off the market because it supposedly interacted so badly with grapefruit (what doesn't!). All I could think was,"Wow... I finally find something that works for me and they rip it away!" ARGH!

(55,035 posts)Never heard of Hismanal. Check ebay. They have all kinds of discontinued products for sale there.
