Aguirre (D) takes early lead in race for San Diego County District 1 supervisor seat

San Diego County voters have made their voices heard in the special election for the vacant Supervisor District 1 seat, and the count is being tallied.

The first election results dropped shortly after the polls closed at 8 p.m. on Tuesday. As the tally rolls in, NBC 7 will update the results below or check the Registrar of Voters website.

Early results on Tuesday night show Imperial Beach Mayor Paloma Aguirre ahead in the race. As of 10:30 p.m., Aguirre holds 53.22% of the vote, or 37,324 votes, while Chula Vista Mayor John McCann holds 46.78% of the vote, or 32,805 votes, according to the Registrar.

There were approximately 9,500 ballots that still needed to be counted on Election Night, and the Registrar said on its website that the next result dump would be posted by 6 p.m. Wednesday.
