"The nation’s largest and longest-running Mexican Independence Day parade returns with music, food, and an astronaut Grand Marshal! East L.A. is about to light up with one of the city’s most vibrant celebrations – the 79th Annual Mexican Independence Day Parade & Festival!

On Sunday, September 14, 2025, thousands will gather along César E. Chávez Avenue to honor culture, community, and tradition. This year’s Grand Marshal is none other than astronaut José M. Hernández, bringing a stellar twist to a beloved local tradition that’s been uniting Angelenos for nearly a century.

Who is Grand Marshal José M. Hernández?
From migrant farmworker to space shuttle astronaut, José M. Hernández is a Mexican-American engineer and astronaut. He participated in the Space Shuttle mission STS-128 in August 2009 and also led the Materials and Processes branch at Johnson Space Center. His journey serves as an inspiration, as he currently acts as a Regent of the University of California, a role that shows his dedication to education and his community." (More)
