I-5 may be shut down due to concerns over live-fire military event at Camp Pendleton

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/i-5-may-be-shut-down-due-to-concerns-over-live-fire-military-event-at-camp-pendleton/ar-AA1OyAiB?ocid=msedgntp&pc=HCTS&cvid=68f0b0da217c40b4bc4713ec754fed3d&ei=16

Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office is weighing whether to close parts of Interstate 5 beginning Friday amid concerns over what it says is a White House-directed plan to use live ordnance during a military anniversary celebration off Camp Pendleton’s coast in San Diego County — where Navy ships are expected to fire over the freeway onto the base.

Newsom's office has received, but not confirmed, reports that live ordnance will be fired from offshore vessels during the event commemorating the Marine Corps' 250th anniversary. The event is titled "Sea to Shore — A Review of Amphibious Strength" and will feature Vice President JD Vance.

Newsom's office said it has received little information about the event or safety plans. The military show of force coincides with No Kings rallies and marches across the state on Saturday that are expected to draw large crowds, demonstrations challenging Trump and what critics say is government overreach.

Firing live missiles onto the base?

Guess he needs to wave his mushroom around to make him feel like he's defeating the protests or some insane thing the voices in his head have told him.

The possibility of wildfires starting up, wouldn't be the first time.

There were times, when I lived in SD, that I would pass by there twice a day. There's a border patrol check station there too.

I would not be at all surprise if some 'accidental aiming snafu' results in the missiles landing somewhere that actually harms people.

The closure will begin at 11 a.m., and stretch from Harbor Drive to Basilone Road.

The California Highway Patrol announced Saturday morning that a section of Interstate 5 will be closed Saturday, October 18, due to a military event at Camp Pendleton.

CHP says the shutdown will last until the end of the event, which is expected to include live ammunition being discharged over the freeway.

Authorities are advising drivers to expect delays on I-5 and other state routes throughout Southern California before, during and after the event.

Looks like the "Yes it will/No it won't" I-5 closure has now been settled, to the inconvenience of thousands of motorists. Glad I'm not heading to LA today.

Camp Pendleton has experienced numerous past wildfires, including the 2014 Tomahawk Fire which burned over 6,000 acres and the 2020 Creek Fire which prompted evacuations and scorched thousands of acres. Other notable fires include the 2014 Roblar Fire, which burned 800 acres, and a more recent fire in August 2025 that affected the Camp Talega area. The base also experienced a series of large wildfires in 2007 that caused significant damage.

protesters basically told them to fuck off today at NO KINGS protest today.

Protesters plan demonstration as VP Vance visits Camp Pendleton https://share.google/yfTc9qaUB1NrOnFOa

"Protesters are planning to gather outside Camp Pendleton this weekend as Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth visit the Marine Corps base for the service's 250th anniversary celebration.

The entrance to Camp Pendleton, one of the largest Marine Corps bases in the United States, was quiet Friday afternoon. But this weekend, the location is expected to be anything but that as both a celebration of hundreds of years of Marine excellence and a potential protest against two of the attending dignitaries take place."
