New ballot processing system in effect at the Shasta County Elections Office

SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. — A new ballot processing system started being used on Thursday at the Shasta County Elections Office in downtown Redding.

Part of the new system takes advantage of the agilis machine. It has been in use for years in the county, sorting about 4,800 returned ballots into precinct groups in front of a group of public observers.

"We're running things through the agilis, setting it up for signature verification. Once that's all run through, and there's about 10,000 to run through, then we'll signature verify them. We'll do the sorts at these table where they're actually going to be able to with these sorting stacks of 50. And then after that we will process them through the tabulator," said Clerk and Registrar of Voters, Clint Curtis.

On election day there will be six tabulators available. One person's role will be to verify a batch of 50 ballots that will be then run through the tabulator by a second person. Then the ballots will be re-counted by a third person. The whole process will be on camera, visible to observers in real time and recorded.
