Delete Request and Opt-out Platform (DROP)
DROP. Delete. Done.
On New Years Day, a government website opened to let Californians demand more than 500 intermediaries called data brokers wipe their personal information from the data on sale and regularly repeat those deletions in the future.
This deletion power is available only to California residents, and data brokers dont have to comply until later this year. Its still worth signing up for deletions now if youre in California and paying attention if youre not.
So much of your personal information is amassed by so many companies that no individual can control the scope and the potential harm. Empowering yourself against rampant data surveillance requires savvy laws, regulation and enforcement that only governments can undertake.

(24,826 posts)searches your info. You then get an email showing you the entry(ies) that they found and then you just select to remove the data. Old addresses.... old phone numbers.
I'm glad California is trying to stop this too.
Thanks for this info.

(32,867 posts)Brokers are likely located all over the world. I can't imagine one in Russia taking the law seriously. How is it even enforced?
Furthermore, providing my name, address, and email only confirms my identity, location, and contact information.
Great idea. But I'm dubious.
