RUN FOR SOMETHING: Luz Prez for Fontana City Council, District 4

Luz was born in South Central Los Angeles to Mexican immigrant parents and raised in Fontana from the age of five, where she attended local public schools from kindergarten through high school. She went on to study at Riverside Community College and Cal Poly Pomona, where she developed a lifelong passion for education, community development, and social justice.

Luz began her career as an English educator, teaching both in the United States and abroad. Her commitment to language and education policy led her to earn a Master’s in Applied Linguistics and complete two years of a Ph.D at the University of Massachusetts Boston. She is currently pursuing an MBA at Boston University, combining her academic background with training in leadership,
management and economic development.

Her professional path includes key roles in local government, where she has worked to make public institutions more inclusive and effective. Luz served in the Mayor’s Office of Policy and the Mayor’s Office of Economic Opportunity and Inclusion for the City of Boston, helping to drive initiatives that support economic mobility, small business support and equitable procurement.

Luz also served as Chief of Staff and Director of Policy for an At-Large Boston City Councilor, where she ran the office and lead a group of seven staffers. Her legislative work focused on education, worker’s rights, economic development, and keeping the city accountable and transparent. During her time on the city council, Luz codified the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Advancement and created the Office of Cultural Affairs, ensuring that our diverse communities have access to city resources and a voice advocating for them through policy initiatives.

Luz’s political work extends to her union work. She joined 32BJ SEIU to support their efforts to unionize Uber and Lyft drivers through a ballot initiative, which passed in 2024.

Beyond her policy work, Luz served as Chair of the Latinx Employee Resource Group for the City of Boston, where she championed diversity, equity, and inclusion across the city’s workforce. She also organized several cultural events on behalf of the mayor.

Having lived abroad in Seoul, South Korea, and Madrid, Spain, and traveled to over 50 countries, Luz brings a global perspective to local governance. Her experiences abroad have shaped her understanding of how effective policies around healthcare, housing, transportation, and education can improve people’s lives.

At home, Luz is a proud mom to a one-year-old and wife to a loving husband. They live in an intergenerational home with Luz’s parents and several animals: two dogs, a cat and a tortoise. Her family is her inspiration and the heart of her commitment to building stronger, more equitable communities for future generations.

At her core, Luz Pérez is guided by the values of equity, inclusion, and community empowerment—principles she strives to uphold in both her public service and personal life.
