RUN FOR SOMETHING: George Syrop Hayward City Council, District 1

Hi, I'm George Syrop.
I was born, raised, and have lived in Hayward for 25 years.

I was elected to the Hayward City Council in 2022 after running a corporate-free campaign because I believe we deserve homegrown leaders that put people before profit from the very start. I’m running for re-election in District 1 to continue fighting against rising costs forcing our neighbors out, to improve public safety, and to make it easier for local businesses to thrive.

Since being elected: I’ve pushed the city to strengthen renter protections, open a new fire station, improve public transit, pave miles of roads, increase homelessness services, re-design the loop, bring new businesses downtown, and more. It has been a privilege fighting for you, and I’m just as committed to being your voice, and your friend, at City Hall as I was on day one.

Prior to serving on Council: I served as a Community Services Commissioner for the City of Hayward, where I worked alongside city staff to allocate funding to local non-profits providing essential services for residents.

I co-founded the Hayward Community Coalition (HayCoCoa), which spurred a city-wide conversation around racial justice and public safety in the wake of the George Floyd uprisings. Our efforts led to the creation of the city’s first mobile mental health crisis response team (HEART) and the Hayward People’s Budget (that funded 12 neighborhood projects across the city including community gardens, ESL tutoring, park renovations, night markets, and more). Since then, HayCoCoa helped prevent six school closures and is currently organizing our neighbors against ICE’s illegal activity in Hayward.

Outside of my work in Hayward: I’ve served as a peer-counselor for the Berkeley Free Clinic, providing free mental health services to primarily low-income and/or unsheltered neighbors. I also helped build tools for social workers assisting residents in food deserts and launched websites for organizations combatting child-trafficking and domestic abuse. I hold a degree in political science and a post baccalaureate certificate in city and regional planning from U.C. Berkeley.

I love our city, our people, and what it means to be #HaywardMade. When it comes to the health, happiness, and prosperity of our community, we should not have to settle for less.

I would be honored to earn your support on November 3rd.
